How NIL Support Elevates Your Entire Team

If you’re a college coach, you’ve probably heard the buzz about NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) deals. And while it might seem like just one more thing to juggle, supporting your athletes in pursuing these opportunities can actually be a huge win for you, your team, and your program overall.
I wanted to share with you some considerations as to why embracing NIL can set your program apart and bring some major benefits.
Recruitment Game-Changer
From the get go, most student-athletes want to know how your program can help them succeed and enjoy their journey on and off the field. When you actively support NIL opportunities, you’re showing recruits (and their parents) that you care about their whole journey, not just their time on the court or in the gym. This gives you a serious edge when it comes to landing top talent as well as recruiting student-athletes who will enjoy being part of your team.
Boosting Team Morale
When student-athletes feel supported in pursuing their goals, they’re happier and more motivated. Plus, watching teammates land cool NIL deals can inspire others to level up their game. A team that celebrates each other’s wins—on and off the field—is a team that thrives together.
Alumni Pride & Support
Athletes who achieve NIL success often stay connected to the program long after they graduate. This strengthens your alumni network, which can mean more engagement, donations, and program support down the line. Imagine a former athlete who’s now a successful entrepreneur coming back to mentor your current players—that’s powerful stuff! And, if current alumni see the great things you're doing with your team, they will want to get involved by offering NIL opportunities and making introductions, adding to the overall success of your NIL efforts and program!

Increased Program Visibility
Your athletes’ NIL stories don’t just boost their personal brands—they put your program in the spotlight, too. When brands and media highlight their successes, it’s your program’s name that’s front and center. That’s free publicity; that’s priceless!
At the end of the day, NIL isn’t just about the individual student-athletes. It’s about creating a culture where everyone wins. By supporting your team’s NIL journey, you’re investing in your athletes, your program, and your own legacy as a coach.
I'm a big believer in providing the tools rather than simply handing athletes the solution, and when it comes to NIL the short and long term benefits of student-athletes pursuing NIL for themselves really develops them personally, professionally and socially. Keep an eye out for my article on that soon!
