How Next-Gen Ops Leaders in AEC Can Build High-Performing Teams for Growth

As a follow-up to my recent article on how to stay ahead of the adoption of new technologies in the rapidly changing architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry, I felt it is important to now look at our next generation operations leaders and how they can achieve success in this new era through effective team building.

With new technologies, design and construction methods, and customer demands, AEC firms need operations leaders who can build high-performing teams primed for revenue growth, profitability, and innovation. As a next-gen ops leader, here are key ways to build successful teams in today's AEC landscape:

Focus on Culture

A positive, collaborative culture is crucial for engagement and retention. As such, it is important to actively foster an environment where team members feel respected, heard, and invested in the company mission. Promote flexibility - remote work options boost morale - and don't underestimate the power of celebrating wins, no matter how small.

Invest in Professional Development

Provide learning opportunities relevant to team members' roles and interests; support participation in conferences, training programs, and industry groups; and create incentives for earning certifications and developing key skills. Developing expertise pays dividends in engagement, quality, and services you can provide.

Embrace New Tech, But Guide Implementation

Leverage technologies like AI, IoT, drones, and cloud-based platforms to enhance quality, efficiency, and capabilities. However, introduce new tech thoughtfully by including team members in selecting solutions, and provide thorough training and support. Change brings growing pains, so empathy and patience are crucial as you navigate these potentially disruptive, yet necessary changes.

Promote Cross-Departmental Collaboration

Break down silos by having teams periodically swap/loan team members to gain a better appreciation, facilitate workshops to help others understand challenges and needs of different teams, or hold "share and learn" sessions. Multi-disciplinary collaboration sparks creativity, problem-solving skills, and innovation. Bridging these silos between departments also enhances internal customer service.

Champion Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Diverse teams are higher-performing teams because this unlocks new perspectives and reduces bias in many areas such as developing business strategies, forming teams, and in hiring and promotions. Create mentorship programs that foster access and actively seek diversity in all levels of leadership. There are many studies that demonstrate how different voices and perspectives drive better outcomes, so, ultimately, a focus on DE&I improves culture, decision making, and service delivery.

Adopt an Agile Mindset

In a fast-changing industry, rigid processes stifle nimble responsiveness. Build a workplace that empowers quick pivots, rapid prototyping, and regular reprioritization. With lean workflows and empowered employees, teams can deliver better results, faster.

Check your Ego at the Door

To build an empowered team, leaders need to check their egos at the door. Avoid micromanaging or controlling decisions, don't demand credit for team successes, and be willing to pitch in on tasks both glamorous and mundane. Modeling humility and service builds trust and connection. Admit when you're wrong and keep an open mind to ideas from below. Your role is to remove roadblocks so your team can thrive. You'll be amazed at what they can accomplish when given the freedom and support to excel.

Success in the AEC industry demands tapping the full potential of your people. By developing high-performing teams built on trust, capabilities, and leading with purpose, next-gen ops leaders can drive sustainable growth, profitability, and competitive advantage.
