How To Negotiate Salary Over the Phone or Zoom
There is a lot of advice out there about negotiating salary. It comes from friends, the internet, and even self-help books.
But I think we can all agree; preparation is the most critical stage of a negotiation. Collaborative bargaining means that you match your interests with the company's. More than ever, you'll need to show how your salary requests may help the organization. If you work in a critical business right now, consider how to position your contributions to ask for a raise.
If you can, consider how your own needs and those of the organization might be aligned. In addition, consider how more flexible hours for childcare or additional mental health days might benefit not only you but also your company's productivity.
Given the current state of affairs, it's appropriate to gather information for a month or two before determining what to ask.
?
Set the Stage
It’s important to practice before negotiating. This is vital when bargaining looks and feels uncomfortable. For some reason, men tend to be better negotiators. Therefore, women are generally advised to seek counsel from a male acquaintance. However, research shows that women are superior negotiators when doing so for someone else..
Therefore, think of a female friend who is good at standing up for herself and schedule a time to discuss your case. Talk over your ideas with her and obtain her opinion.
Next, schedule a meeting with your hiring manager or employer. Many hardball negotiators would propose an ambush here. In other words, you shouldn't reveal all your cards at once, but you should let your supervisor know what you plan to discuss. Just letting your manager know you wish to discuss job responsibilities or processes can suffice.
The big question is: Do you use Zoom or a phone call? It’s true that video can help you personalize yourself in addition to being able to read your boss's cues. You can better represent yourself if you can understand body language signs. However, if video makes you anxious, go with the phone. Ultimately, you must choose what will make you a better advocate for yourself.

Saying And, Not But
Start by acknowledging the unusual times we are living in. You may be anxious and overworked, but so is your boss. Starting with empathy makes the other person feel acknowledged and understood. We often end this part of the conversation with a “but”. However, we should end with a “and.” Putting someone on the defensive by saying, “I know you're under a lot of strain and I know the company is facing XYZ...but”
Using “and we've been talking” instead of “but” avoids creating an opposition. Therefore, by using “and,” you imply that your needs and the company's are compatible.

If you don't know enough to empathize with your boss, ask about the company's current state and future priorities. If they aren't really as in alignment with your requests as you were thinking, it's fine to leave the meeting and return to research and stage setting.

Look to the Future
You may feel that a “no” or “not now” terminates the dialogue. However, don’t let such a response go unchallenged. A corporation may not be able to pay you more right now. Therefore, before you leave, ask to revisit it. Additionally, you can set a date instead of just saying you'll revisit it.
“OK, I'll send a Google Cal to invite immediately for July so we can review it.” This may seem crazy to schedule a meeting in July. However, you can always postpone it. It's a worse mistake to say “we'll review it someday” and then wait until a year from now and still not have that conversation.
