Let’s start by answering the question, “What is negative energy?”
Negative energy can have a few sources:
- Your relationships - the people with whom you interact
- Your environment - the aspects within which you function
- Your information sources - the elements that formulate your thoughts
Being able to identify the causes of the problem can help us better address the issue at hand. The fact that each category above starts with the word “Your” indicates that YOU can change the energy that gets emitted from each of these aspects. This awareness is the starting point of protecting yourself from negative energy or toxicity.
Let’s take a deeper look.
Your relationships
By evaluating the value and dynamics of each of our interactions, we can determine which ones are healthy versus draining. If you’ve done everything in your power to understand or resolve imbalances in relationships and they are still causing pain, you have to end them and move on. This applies to co-workers, bosses, or anyone in your social circle.
Your Environment
The expression, “A cluttered desk means a cluttered mind” summarizes the essence of the impact of one’s environment. If your immediate surroundings are in disarray, whether you realize it or not, that weighs on you mentally! By creating a sense of order and efficiency, you can eliminate a significant amount of stress and negative thoughts.
Your Information Sources
Think about how you feel when you watch a comedy. It makes you smile and laugh, right? In cases where we over-consume negative information in the form of media news for example, we can easily lose ourselves in that negativity. It is important not to get sucked into that darkness. Watching as an independent, objective viewer helps us better distinguish fiction from reality. This clarity keeps us calm and helps us be intentional with our reactions and actions.
These three categories give us levers to pull to reduce and eventually eliminate negative energy. The key is to recognize these levers exist and take control of them.
