How to navigate a job market that is about to be disrupted by AI?

This short article is a personal reflection, a concrete support for all those who wonder about the consequences of this innovation that is constantly being discussed. In my opinion, it's a set of technologies that also represents an opportunity to reflect on one's professional path. To make the best use of it - and not passively undergo it - we can act in several ways:

  • Acceptance. The impact that technologies based on Artificial Intelligence (#AI) are generating on the market (all sectors) and on the business of our organization is now evident. Accepting that this may have effects on our role and our way of working represents an important first step. Acceptance does not mean resignation, but rather welcoming change with curiosity and a desire to understand it in order to be an active part of it.
  • Information. Living through change means understanding it and making it your own. For this reason, it is essential to know the subject and develop a personal, conscious, and informed opinion. To maximize the benefits for ourselves, it is recommended to apply the 'triangulation of sources' method. In other words, do not limit yourself to a few sources that converge in presenting the same point of view or position. It is advisable to explore both popular and scientific sources to gain at least a basic understanding of AI concepts, as well as its application areas and use cases. This will enable us to anticipate possible future scenarios and understand how AI can integrate into our daily work life.
  • Collaboration. According to many authors, researches and managers, AI-based technologies will increasingly tend to be tools for 'enhancing' human capabilities in the workplace, rather than elements of competition or replacement. Currently, organizations are already adopting tools to automate repetitive processes and tasks. It is hypothesized that this could free up time for people, which could be used in other higher value-added activities. These activities will require advanced critical thinking skills, such as analyzing data and information from various sources, including AI models like #GPT. Moreover, human skills such as empathy, communication, and creativity will be needed to tackle the growing complexity of work challenges. The increased focus on methodologies like #designthinking highlights this need to emphasize relationships and collaboration to address evolving work challenges.?
  • Guidance: If developing awareness about the ongoing change and oneself is the foundation for feeling like an ‘active’ participant, the next advice is to start reflecting on the opportunities to test yourself outside your comfort zone. For example: talk with colleagues to better understand their activities and how their way of working is changing; propose to contribute to company projects in multi-disciplinary teams (if available); observe which skills from other organizational areas might be more easily acquired given your background; attend events on innovation and emerging technologies, also taking the opportunity to further develop your professional network; monitor reports, research, and the job market to understand the dynamics leading to the creation of new ‘hybrid’ professional profiles.
  • Learning: The final step in this continuous journey involves evaluating training opportunities offered by educational institutions and qualified organizations. These opportunities allow you to acquire new skills or consolidate existing ones in a systematic way. An approach that combines theoretical understanding with practical experimentation in realistic contexts, such as project/problem-based learning, can be particularly effective. The accessible training offer is increasingly vast and varied. Therefore, I believe it is essential for each of us to carefully evaluate the sources (who provides the training) and the training formats (methods and required commitment) to maximize the benefits obtained.

These suggestions stem from a deep trust in people and their ability to improve through curiosity, learning, and the willingness to face challenges and difficulties. However, all this is possible only if approached with awareness and consistency over time.

AI can provide great support to people and processes. However, there are two things that need to be taken into account - firstly, AI is not in a position to make decisions and, secondly, the use of AI (and any data that comes from using AI) needs to be put into context.
