How to navigate HR tech procurement

How to navigate HR tech procurement

There are enormous opportunities for HR tech to make life easier for everyone at work. In fact, Jessie Schofer believes that HR tech underpins how well the whole business works. So, why do so many tech projects fall by the wayside? Much of it is down to the procurement process, says Jessie, who talked to us about the best way to pick your core HR infrastructure.?

Why is it so hard for HR to purchase the right tech??

How does HR end up procuring something that isn’t quite right? It stems from a lack of roadmap about the business needs, says tech procurement expert, Jessie Schofer. While HR shouldn’t need to become an expert in procurement in order to select tech, HR does need to be aware of their technical requirements. Jessie’s advice is to create a stakeholder map; engage with IT, legal, and data teams; and take a methodical approach to identifying business requirements.?

Is having the wrong HR tech a big deal??

Yes, having the wrong HR tech can stop a business in its tracks, says Jessie. For example, if a company is planning to scale, can your ATS do things it hasn’t needed to do before, such as recruiting for a large number of entry level employees on an international basis? As the business matures, it will need different tech to support each stage of growth. A business might go through two or three tech products with the same application as business needs evolve.??

How can you minimise the risk of a new HR tech rollout??

In the early stages, ask about a trial, proof of concept or pilot, says Jessie. It’s a great way to test the waters before you make a commitment and a good opportunity to get feedback and input from stakeholders. When it comes to full rollout, then articulating the value that the tool adds is essential. So often when people aren’t logging in, or are complaining about doing so, it’s really because they don’t understand the value of doing so.?

How do you stay in the driving seat on a tech demo?

As an HR professional rather than tech expert, how do you stay in the driving seat on a tech demo when you’re seeing all the shiny features? Firstly, be clear on your assessment criteria (Stakkd has a free template for this) – decide which features are make or break and what’s nice to have. Secondly, treat the demo with planning and care, for example, know who you’re going to be speaking to. Lastly, be clear with the vendor on what your needs are and what you’re expecting to see.?
