How to Navigate Change and Let Go of Control

How to Navigate Change and Let Go of Control

Our story is not just about surviving, but thriving, and 2021 has shown us that focus and letting go of things we cannot control will take you further than you ever dreamt of.?

While 2020 was a year we made important decisions, in 2021, we started to see how this affected our company in real life. Here are important lessons we learned along the way:

1. Never Burn the Bridges Behind You - It’s Pointless

I remember that in January, on my daughter’s birthday, we received two notices from the leadership team, and it did go both ways. When you hand in a notice, you have two options: deliver what you promised until your notice period runs out or not.?

In the grand scheme of business, delivering what you promised is essential. Burning bridges, whether consciously or not, will simply lead to lack rather than abundance. I learned this at 20 when a hasty decision cut ties with a valuable connection. Reputation travels far, and every delivery, every commitment, contributes to the legacy you leave.

2. Sailing Towards New Horizons: Downsizing with Purpose

Change is inevitable, and in our 14th year, ITMAGINATION embraced it. Downsizing our headquarters to 1/10th of its former size allowed flexibility, with people choosing where and how they work (we work now from all around Europe!). This decision freed us from traffic jams and brought focus to our team. Sometimes, less truly is more.

3. Shedding Ballast: Light Restructuring

Letting go of physical assets, desks, and laptops was symbolic yet transformative. Before we were like a heavy, slow container ship, and after we've become a light, quick, agile yacht. New leadership brought fresh perspectives, turning our company into a nimble vessel capable of navigating the ever-changing business seas.

4. The Power of Focus: Setting Sail with Purpose

When circumstances are beyond your control, having a plan and unwavering focus are crucial. We used to get frustrated when something was out of our control, now with a new perspective, we shift attention to what can be done about it instead.?

When I trained for a marathon, I didn’t run for running’s sake. I focused on the 'why', which fuelled my determination. I haven’t skipped a training, I’ve eaten what I was supposed to, and achieved 20 minutes faster time than before!?

Similarly, in business – if you set your own benchmarks, think about your ‘why’, and then follow your plan, the goals are much more achievable. It worked for ITMAGINATION in 2021, when we decided to merge all our companies into one and start to work with specific clients that aligned to our mission.?

So, there you have it – our wild ride of ups, downs, and a lot of figuring things out! The big takeaway? Our story isn't just about staying afloat, but completely owning the game. So, go on, take these lessons, ride your own waves, and make your business journey one heck of an adventure!?

What is your take on slimming your business for faster growth? Let me know in the comments.
