How to Be a Natural at Public Speaking and Content Creation
There are many personas one can adopt as a professional speaker. The angry motivational man, the cool expert man, the nerdy genius man, and so on. But what sets the professionals apart from the amateurs is not the persona, it is how easy they make it look. In this article, you will learn three tips to be natural at public speaking so you too can appear to effortlessly command attention.
Practice Eye Contact
It is very hard, nearly impossible, to think while holding eye contact. But if you practice looking at one spot and recalling names, dates, and other information without giving in to the temptation to look away, you will build a charismatic eye-contact.
I recommend my students to build their ability to sustain eye contact because it is also the skill needed to make digitally recorded content seem natural. After all, you are looking at the camera while pretending it is a person.
Ditch the PowerPoint Dependence
Another way to appear natural is to avoid the most unnatural thing to ever become the norm in the professional speaking industry. Stop looking at the PowerPoint to read off of the slides. I am a big fan of spontaneity, as is evident from my podcasts, live calls, and videos.
Instead of reading, try engaging. Ask questions from your audience. Be comfortable with silence. And let your speech be guided by a few bullet points on a card, not paragraphs on slides.

Have Energy
The business of speaking is about transferring energy. Someone who is a natural at dancing shows up with energy. Someone who is a natural at singing shows up with energy. As a public speaker, you cannot show up with the wrong energy, though. If you show up too uptight, then you appear unnatural.
To have the right energy you should be excited about the value that you're going to give your audience. So it is important that you aren't too concerned with what the audience will think of you. That's amateur energy. Get tunnel-visioned on value to the point where you have zero awareness for what the audience thinks of you. Do you think Elon Musk is worried about what people think? Do you think Jeff Bezos is concerned with that? Powerful people rarely care about being judged. To come off as a powerful speaker, you too should get the least concerned with being judged.
All in all, you do not need to adopt a 'cool' speaker persona, you just need to be a good speaker in a manner that is natural to you. To do this, you have to learn how to connect with sustained eye contact. I recommend new content creators to speak to the camera as if it's their friend. Eye contact is handy for that, as it is for speaking from the stage. You should also ditch lengthy paragraphs in favor of bullet points. When you trust yourself to deliver without having to read off a page, you signal skill. Finally, I want you to get so excited about the value you're giving your audience that you forget about what they think of you. All those combined make you appear natural at public speaking. And if you do these long enough, you become naturally good at public speaking.
I leave you in the love and in the light of the One Infinite Creator. Go forth, then, rejoicing in the power and the peace of your dreams.
