How My High School Track Coach Transformed Me From Loser to World-Class Athlete and Millionaire

In high school, I was a better than average basketball player. I loved basketball.

But let’s be real. I was a 6 foot, 165 pound dude with good athleticism but a broken jump shot and average ball handling.

I had blinders up and basketball was all I thought about.

Like many high school athletes… I didn’t think about college sports. I imagined a couple cool years of high school basketball.. then, into the real world to work locally I go.

My junior year of high school, I didn’t plan on competing in track and field as a high jumper.

My brother had just graduated, a lot of my friends on the team were now in college. I wasn’t interested and truthfully… didn’t think I’d ever be any good.

It was Coach Leeth who not only pulled me out of a gym to try high jump after seeing my jumping ability… it was he who came to me, and asked me directly…

“Are you coming out for track this year.”

I pondered… I debated… but ultimately, I said yes.

As a teenager, I didn’t like feeling like I was letting people down, and truthfully, I didn’t want to let him down… even though, in my mind, I had previously decided NOT to pursue track.

Had he not taken the initiative to FIRST talk me into high jumping and secondly, ask me directly to join the team.

Things would have for SURE been different for me.

But.. MUCH more different than you probably think…

We started practicing… and high jumping didn’t exactly- come naturally. I was “decent at best”…

Coach would print training documentation from Yahoo, and we’d sit outside on the high jump mat and review the materials together. We’d study, and then we’d act.

There was no ego with Coach Leeth. We were on this mission together, and together, we learned and implemented.

He was patient with me… and saw a talent NO ONE else recognized.

That year, I went from a rookie who didn’t really care, unknowing to how to properly high jump, to the best in the state…jumping 6'10" and earning top 8 honors in the country, I became an All American.

All because Coach Leeth believed in me more than I believed in myself.

He didn’t stop there…

He pushed to get me accepted in regional and national invite only meets. Driving me states away on his off days just to allow me to compete against and beat the best in the country.

I learned to compete and win, but the BIGGEST ingredient to my success was simply, having support. Having people who believed in me like he did.

For those who know me.. my story became pretty spectacular after high school.

For those who do not know me that well.. I’ll keep it brief- this post is 100% NOT about me… but about Coach Leeth.

I won 3 state championships, set multiple meet records in high school high jump, jumping over 7 foot multiple times.

I went undefeated 2 years straight in state/regional competition and earned a scholarship to Clemson University where I went on to win 7 out of 8 ACC Championships, setting a school record, and being considered one of the best in the world.

My college coaches helped keep the confidence burning inside of me through out my years at Clemson, and also impacted my life greatly.

After College, I high jumped a year professionally before an injury kept me from the Olympic Trials…

I put my learned focus to be GREAT at anything I put my mind towards- and the confidence instilled in me to new areas of life.

I went on to become a top 1% poker player online, win a national dunk championship, star in tv commercials, and build multiple 7 figure online businesses.

But let me put it on the record now…

I don’t think ANY of my accomplishments would have played out the way they did, had Coach Leeth not believed in me first.

Becoming a champion at the high school level allowed me the confidence to compete at the collegiate level. I would have NEVER high jumped had it been for Coach Leeth.. 100%

High school gave me the confidence to WIN in college.

Winning at the collegiate level and becoming world class high jumper, made me realize my capability to do ANYTHING.

I used the same confidence to master poker..

… dunking…

… and then, to compete in business at a fairly high level.

Coach Leeth changed my life.. 100% hands down. I’m CERTAIN of it.

I’ve had MANY incredibly impactful people in my life… from my family, to my college coaches, to business mentors and friends.

But let it be known, it started with Coach Leeth and I’m forever grateful for this man. He’s done more for me that he’ll ever know… and much much more than he’d ever be willing to take credit for.

To coaches today at ALL levels…

How you interact with your athletes or clients, child or grown, has much more impact than how they play that week. You have the ability to inspire and unlock greatness in people- and you never ever know how your ripple might become a wave.
