How Much Work Experience Do You Need For A 482 Visa?

G’day, everybody – We hope you had a great week, and we’d like to offer a warm welcome to this week’s Down Under digest.

Can you believe it’s February already? It really doesn’t feel like it’s been two minutes since we removed the Christmas decorations from the work areas of our office, and we are well and truly into the middle of the first quarter already.

This week has been a busy week at 482 Jobs. Our team have posted over 380 Sponsored visa opportunities in the past week, with healthcare, hospitality and trade jobs continuing to be driving the bulk of our new sponsored job opportunities here in Australia. In the past week, we have also seen some good roles in accountancy and Information technology posted, and we expect the volume of roles, in general, to continue as the year goes on.

To see if we have a job in Australia matching your skills and background, you can check out our latest jobs using the search form on our homepage at https://482jobs.com. Remember, every job we list comes with Australia 482 Visa sponsorship!

Visa processing times article

This week our team published a fantastic new guide on Visa processing times.

When it comes to the 482 Visa, understanding the processing time is crucial as it helps set realistic expectations for how long the process takes, which will help you plan for a smooth visa application process.

Additionally, understanding the factors impacting the processing time can help reduce delays and ensure quicker approval when applying for this visa. You can review our guide by clicking here: Current 482 Visa Processing Times.

We recommend that you bookmark this guide, as we will update the processing times monthly.

Work Experience – How much do you need?

As the 482 Visa is aimed at filling ‘in-demand’ positions in the Australian job market that suitable Australian workers can’t fill, it’s essential that candidates have some good experience in the job they are applying for.

When we share jobs on our LinkedIn page, for example, we often receive many replies from people who are ‘Interested’ however, a quick review of their LinkedIn profile indicates that they have zero experience in the job opportunity we are sharing.

By way of an example, many people can cook food. This does not mean you would necessarily be a good fit for a chef opportunity in Australia. You need professional experience in the occupation if you are planning to apply.

What is ‘professional’ experience, and how much work experience do you need?

To apply, you must have two years of full-time work experience in your nominated (or a closely related) occupation.

This experience must have been gained after completing any required qualifications and should have been full-time, averaging 38 hours per week.

Part-time work between 32 and 45 hours per week can also be considered full-time. Part-time work equivalent to 2 years full-time will be considered if the experience and skills are relevant. ?Casual periodic employment does not count.

Work experience must be in a related field, and tasks must be the same or closely related to the nominated occupation at the same skill level. The two years of full-time experience must be met at the time of the visa, but if you almost have two years at the time of your job application, you may be able to gain time to meet the criteria while your visa is processed (Refer Visa processing times article above).

If you don’t meet the two years of full-time experience requirement, you could consider other visa options, such as

  • Temporary Activity (subclass 408) visa under the Australian Government endorsed events (COVID-19 Pandemic event)?– the Department has remodelled this visa to serve the interests of Australia post covid ‘economic recovery’. It can be approved for up to 12 months.
  • Working Holiday (subclass 417) visa/?Work and Holiday (subclass 462) visa?– noting that the visa holder is only allowed to work six months for the same employer
  • Training (subclass 407) visa?for up to 2 years – the applicant needs at least 12 months of full-time experience in the occupation in the 24 months preceding the time of application.
  • Student (subclass 500) visa?– considering the 40 hours a fortnight limitation (condition currently relaxed until 30 June 2023)

We hope you found this context useful. We will look to continue to bring you up to speed on how the 482 Visa works through our newsletters and website guides.
