How Much Salary am I Worth?

How Much Salary am I Worth?

During job interviews, suspense mostly brews when the question 'What is your salary expectation' is asked by a recruiter. Here's where your negotiation skills usually kick in or is most tested, because this could just be the deal breaker!

I want to acknowledge that most times, which isn't transparent or fair to applicants, most recruiters don't disclose salaries or remunerations. They only fix it during this instance using what the applicant asked for. So be cautious, this may land you so many regrets if not properly handled!

Don't accept less for what you know you worth more. If you do, you'll be the most miserable employee wishing you never accepted the offer in the first place. And you know what? You'll keep hating your work and most disturbing is the fact that you will resent to hating yourself!

Don't price yourself less, knowing quite well that you're in for the satisfaction of the remuneration, pecks and salary first before you're in for the fact you enjoy your job.

Don't get carried away by empty promises made to you if not in writing.

As an experienced recruiter, I know quite well those lines you'll always get hooked on during interviews that are mere promises just made in order to fill a position as fast as possible. Though the recruiter may not look or act desperate, but truly, they are desperate finding the best match and sadly pricing them less!

Don't feel taken aback. Should you provide a salary range which was expected to be negotiated and the recruiter thought you're asking for too much, so be it, let it go! Don't settle for less!!

Imagine applying to an organization and this happens, I'll want to remind you that that's just one organization out of countless organizations. Why feel bad when you've not tried a handful at least? I know it's draining and this I call ‘the time of truth’ in job search, but make it count, make it worth it till the search is over with a satisfactory job offer!

And to remind you, organizations differ and so is both culture and remunerations. Don't waste away in an organization you're not so okay with the culture even if the pay is good. And in the same vein, don't waste away in an organization where the culture is great and the pay is nothing to cover your expenses. After all, you're working to be able to cover expenses and at least have some savings and not some kind of charity work!

During most of my career clarity sessions, I make professionals understand their place in the big picture of today's work places and the practice of capitalism, especially those that always pushes unhealthy work pressure as a way of holding back the joy necessary to be experienced by employees.

I’ll leave you with this line-- Someone once said, 'if you get on the wrong train, be sure to get off on the first stop. The longer you stay on, the more expensive the return trip is going to cost you.'

Don't be desperate while job hunting, this would make you prone to easily accept just any offer which is a bad idea.

Know your worth. Get clarity if you are still confused and you'll be glad you did in the long run!

Don't feel you could just manage it through when you know your work isn't fulfilling and it's draining, and at the same time isn't giving you what you need. To find more fulfillment, try upskilling. Take that course and enroll for that training. It's said that the work is hard but the dividends is sweet. And I want to remind you that QUITTING isn't a crime and starting over may just be the only option. But do it anyways, find fulfillment in your career. Get paid what you're worth and nothing less!
