How Much Protein Should You Eat A Day?

By now, you probably already know that protein is an essential component of a balanced diet.

It helps you build muscle but most importantly, it prevents you from losing the muscle you already carry.

As we age, our body goes through a process called sarcopenia which is the natural deterioration of muscle mass.

On average, we lose 3-8% per decade after the age of 30.

After 60, those numbers almost double.

So how can we prevent this from happening?

Two easy steps...


  1. Lift weights
  2. Consume adequate protein


For those reasons that it becomes even more important to lift weights after the age of 30 than when you’re younger.

Especially if you’re over 40.

And how much protein should you aim to consume per day?

1g of protein per pound of body weight or 2.2 g of protein per kg of body weight.

This means if you weigh 180 lbs, that’s 180 g of protein a day.

Which I know may seem like a lot.

?Most people who start my program are only consuming around 30-50 g of protein daily.

And it’s important to point out that you shouldn't just jump from 30 g to 180 g.

Your body needs to adjust to this new level of protein otherwise you can run into all sorts of trouble with your digestion.

And to give you some quick guidance on how much protein you’ll find in some common foods.


1 large egg – 7 g.

1 large chicken breast – 35-40 g.

1 protein shake – 25-30 g.

200g of lean beef – 40-50 g.
