How Much Money Should My Law Firm Spend On Marketing?

Over the years I have met with hundreds of law firms. There are two huge mistakes firms can make to destroy their chances at getting the highest Return on Investment possible with their marketing efforts. Want to know what they are?
Mistake 1: Under Spending
It's easier to "dip your toe in" when we first start out with a new marketing plan. Fear of the unknown is real and quite honestly, I get it. However, if you under-spend in your marketing budget and fail to compete even at a (what I like to call) a participation level, you can quickly throw money away. There's just not enough resources behind the strategy to generate enough leads and paying clients to get the 5 TIMES RETURN you want.
Mistake 2: Over-spending
Sometimes firms over-spend for their market and practice area and their returns diminish as a consequence.
So this begs the question: What SHOULD a firm spend to MAXIMIZE RETURNS? What's the "sweet spot"?
