How much credit should you take for your mentee's result?
Shubham Mittal
Strategic advisor for coaches/ mentors to validate their strategies and decisions so they can be confident before implementing them
I've seen mentors/ coaches/ trainers, and even performance marketers...
They tend to take credit for ALL the results their mentees/ students get after coming into their contacts.
Well, there is no problem with claiming the results, as all businesses do that...
However, this business is such that you get to transfer a HUMAN LIFE.
AND NOTHING CAN CHANGE IN A HUMAN'S LIFE UNLESS THEY WANT TO CHANGE THEMSELVES.
So, when I see coaches/ mentors/ service providers saying they are the reason students got the result, is it completely true?
Let's go ahead and evaluate.
You will agree that there are 3 types of students/ mentees.
Category 1 - Have done well and have some solid skills/ corporate experience.
Category 2 - Stuck in life and need the right direction to move forward
Category 3 - Completely lost and unsure of their life/ career
Let's talk about Category 1.
These people just look for someone who can show them a STRUCTURED pathway to consolidate their ideas/ experience so they can continue to move forward.
Not only move forward but take leaps to create unparalleled success.
In this category, if the mentor believes they were solely responsible for the results, I don't consider that to be true.
Why?
If it were true, the mentor/ coach should have obtained the results for category 2 and 3 as well on a similar level, but that's not what happens.

Let's talk about category 2.
They have many ideas and want to move forward, but they are surrounded by fear and lack the courage to try something new or unique.
These people probably need some validation so they can start to consider themselves worthy, and once they get the push from their mentor, they start to make decent progress.
As they see results, they continue to improve their efforts and get things done.
In such a case, I believe it's a joint effort by the mentee and mentor, and if the mentor alone takes responsibility for such results - Sorry, but I consider them self-obsessed coaches who want to increase their wall of fame.
If that's not enough, let's look at Category 3.
These people are not motivated in life but are very emotionally driven, and once they see shiny objects, they are likely to jump on them.
They take any opportunity that sells them a dream without putting in effort/ thinking it will suddenly change their lives.
And once they come on board, very few of them really get any results.
If mentors were solely behind the success of Categories 1 and 2, then why are people in Category 3 NOT getting similar results?
That's the critical question to ponder upon.
Coaches/ Mentors - Don't get diluted when few of your mentees get the results and take sole credit of their acheivement. It's a joint effort.
If you're a coach/ mentor/ trainer/ consultant and work in the B2C market...
Please be kind enough to show your mentees that they, too, put in a lot of effort and sacrificed many things to achieve what they have achieved.
At the same time, if you are on the opposite side of the spectrum, don't think that just having a coach or mentor will change your results.
Not at all. You need to put in the effort and just do what they tell you to do.
