How much content is too much?

We’re living in a society where we're spoilt for choice.

Social media platforms. Content creators. Opinions. It’s all at our fingertips, available 24/7. But have you ever wondered, when is it too much?

Gone are the days where you would come home from school and have to sign onto your family computer to log into Bebo and MSN (may they rest in peace). Those simpler times where we didn't have access to information at all hours of the day now feel like a distant memory.

The digital world has evolved into a wild and wonderful beast, which, like anything, brings both pros and cons. Many of us love listening to podcasts and audibles on our daily walks and following inspiring creators who are 5-10 years ahead of us. Their insights and success stories can be incredibly motivating. But I've found this can also lead to fatigue, where we're inundated with information and struggle to take action.

The endless stream of information and opinions on:

“How to run a business 101.”

“You have to sacrifice your life and your first born to get to where you want.”

“6 figure this and 7 figure that.” can be overwhelming.

Don’t get me wrong— (some of) these messages can be inspiring and relevant, especially if it's coming from a creator that has had a similar and humble beginning as yourself. However, the sheer volume of content can sometimes lead to a comparison trap. We start to measure our own progress against the highlight reels of others, which can be discouraging and exhausting.

So, how do we manage this information overload? Here are a few tips that might help:

1. Curate Your Feed

  • Be selective about the content you consume. Unfollow accounts that don’t add value to your life or make you feel like you're behind.
  • Follow creators who inspire you and provide actionable advice that resonates with your goals and values.

2. Set Boundaries

  • Allocate specific times of the day for social media and stick to them.
  • Consider digital detox days where you disconnect entirely to recharge.

3. Focus on Quality, Not Quantity

  • Engage with content that interests you and ignore the rest. Quality content will provide more value and insight than consuming a large volume of superficial information.

4. Reflect and Take Action

  • Instead of passively consuming content, take time to reflect on what you’ve learned and how you can apply it to your life.
  • Set small, actionable goals based on the insights you gain.

5. Practice Self-Compassion

  • Remember that everyone’s journey is unique. Avoid comparing your path to others. Celebrate your own progress and milestones, no matter how small they may seem.

Social media, especially LinkedIn, provides learning and growth opportunities right at your fingertips. Sometimes it's not about consuming more information; it's about taking action and sharing the knowledge you already have.

Take a step back, curate your feed and be intentional with what you consume.
