How to Move Your Mountain
Paul Kearley
Working with organizations in solving their leadership and management effectiveness crises.
Every morning at 7:30, I go on a walkabout with Kady, my Border Collie and best friend.
Lately, because of restrictions as to where we can go, we’ve been doing the same routine and location… day after day after long day. Except for today. As my wife was going out the door to her work, she said, “Why don’t you come with me and walk back home?” I jumped at the idea. A different location! Great idea.
So, we played in the sports field of Kingswood University which was eerily quiet, throwing and chasing the ball and then decided to walk home. The way home meant that we had to walk through a noisy raven infested cemetery. Along the way, I stopped to look at and read the inscriptions on the headstones. One took me off guard. It had three little Canadian flags stuck in the ground, fluttering in the breeze. Why three I thought? Here lay the remains of 3 brothers killed in the first world war. One 23, one 25 and one 27. Killed in action in 1916 at the Somme in France. So very far away from here, yet so very close. And I stood there, a huge lump in my throat, thinking about what a great loss it would have been to the family. And I thought about the unmeasurable potential that was lost, not only with these three young men, but by the total loss in the whole war. Millions of people, just like you and me. All with potential to be something! To achieve great things! To love and be loved and to raise up families of their own.
A quick look around and you could see thousands of headstones standing vigil, stained by time and decay. People who had never sacrificed their lives in a war, but still fought their own battles. Battles of doubt, battles of disagreements. Battles of self image. Battles of regret.
What dreams lay with the bones of the passed? What did they achieve? What mountains did they climb? What set their hearts rapidly beating?
What lay undone?
And so it is with us, the living. What battles are we facing that we could put to rest or simply walk away from? These are the ones that keep us up at night and create great rifts between us, when they don’t have to.
We all have the ability to reach great heights, yet we often talk ourselves out of it. It’s too high. It’s too far. It’s too difficult. I may fail.
Yes, they may be, but is that any reason to stop?
All we need to start doing is believing in ourselves again, because with belief you could move your mountains.
Without belief there is no growth.
Without belief there is no victory.
Without belief there is no love. And we could certainly use more of that.
Make today the day you fondly look back upon and say, “That was the day my life changed!”
Make an Impact today!
