It’s easy to get stuck in the “thinking” phase when you have a great idea. In fact, it’s almost too easy. We come up with ideas, brainstorm, refine, and repeat. But here’s the thing—if you never move from ideation to creation, those ideas remain just that—ideas. And while brainstorming is essential, it’s action that turns dreams into reality.
If you’ve been caught in the cycle of planning but not executing, you’re not alone. I’ve been there. It’s comfortable to stay in the planning stage because it doesn’t require you to take risks or face the unknown. But the real magic happens when you finally take that leap from thinking to doing. Let’s talk about how you can move past that ideation phase and into the creation phase, no matter where you are in your leadership journey.
1. Break Your Big Idea Into Actionable Steps
One of the easiest ways to move forward is to break your big idea into bite-sized, actionable steps. Big projects or ideas can feel overwhelming, but when you divide them into smaller tasks, they become much more manageable. This way, instead of being paralyzed by the enormity of the task at hand, you can focus on completing small steps that lead you toward the bigger goal.
Start by writing down the first step you can take today. It doesn’t have to be perfect. In fact, don’t worry about perfection at all. The key is just to start. Once you start, momentum builds.
2. Embrace Imperfection—It’s Part of the Process
The quest for perfection can be a huge roadblock. I’ve seen countless entrepreneurs, leaders, and creators get stuck in the idea phase because they want everything to be “just right.” But let’s face it: perfection doesn’t exist. It’s an illusion. The important thing is progress, not perfection.
Every successful leader and creator have embraced imperfection in their journey. The sooner you accept that mistakes will happen along the way, the easier it will be to move from ideation to creation. The most important thing is that you start, learn, adapt, and keep improving as you go.
3. Get Comfortable with Discomfort
It’s natural to feel a bit uncomfortable when starting something new. After all, the creation process involves risk, uncertainty, and a bit of fear. But here’s the truth: discomfort is a sign of growth. When you challenge yourself, you’re expanding your horizons and learning new things.
The discomfort you feel is a signal that you’re on the right path. Embrace it. You’ll never be fully ready, and you’ll never have all the answers. But that’s okay. You can figure it out as you go.

4. Don’t Wait for Everything to Be Perfect—Just Get Started
Too many people wait for the “perfect moment” to begin. They think that once they have all the pieces in place, then they can finally start. But this often leads to never starting at all.
The perfect moment is now. There’s no time like the present to take the first step. You don’t need everything figured out to start making progress. The key is to take action, even if it’s small. Once you get moving, things will fall into place, and you’ll gain clarity along the way.
5. Surround Yourself with Supportive People
Going from ideation to creation can be tough, and it’s easy to get discouraged along the way. One of the best things you can do is surround yourself with a supportive community. Whether it’s mentors, peers, or people who understand your vision, having a support system can help you stay motivated when things get hard.
Look for people who inspire you, challenge you, and push you to keep going. They’ll help keep you accountable and encourage you when you need it the most.
Moving from the ideation phase to the creation phase isn’t easy, but it’s absolutely worth it. It’s where the magic happens. If you want to turn your vision into reality, you have to take action. Break your idea down into steps, embrace imperfection, get comfortable with discomfort, and don’t wait for everything to be perfect. And most importantly, lean on others who will help you stay on track and cheer you on as you move forward.
If you’ve been sitting on an idea for too long, now’s the time to take action. Start small, start messy, but start. And remember, every successful leader and entrepreneur was once in your shoes. They took that first step, learned from their mistakes, and kept moving forward. And so can you.
What’s one small action you can take today to move your idea closer to reality?
