Motivation is (sadly) not something we can rely on to rain from the sky and land in our laps. We've all been through periods where we found it impossible to ignite motivation.
It sucks!
To feel motivated during these times of lethargy and procrastination, you first need to get the ball rolling. Create some momentum, and then keep doing that thing until you feel the energy growing inside you. Energy because, "Wow! this actually feels good", or energy because the pain caused by not doing the thing is a worse outcome for you.
I want to exercise regularly and right now I'm not in a rhythm with it, which hurts, because I've been 'in the zone' many times before. I know just how vital exercise is to my physical and mental health.
So, I'm making myself go for an easy jog a few times a week to feed my motivation. To make this easier I set a 'jog time' each day, so I don't need to do any extra thinking about it. For me, this is the morning.
One thing I've learned about myself over the years is that the morning is my time for exercise. If I try any other time of day it's highly likely it won't happen.
Make the steps toward the desired action easy and you'll increase the likelihood of feeling motivated.
Set a schedule - Turn up - Build a routine
Turning up each time and building a routine means it becomes second nature, you don't need to think about the intricacies of how/ where and why.
You just do it.
Forming a routine drastically increases your likelihood of following through on the action. Following through on the action feeds motivation.
This is why Shawn Achor of The Happiness Advantage made a routine out of sleeping in his gym clothes. Waking up dressed for the gym meant it was easier for him to start!

4 年I know exactly what you mean about getting yourself into the right environment to get yourself into the zone and build momentum. I sometimes find I just don't want to sit at my usual desk. So I just change where I flip open my laptop. Then before I start work, I give myself a few minutes to respond to any LinkedIn arcticles that interest me...

4 年A lot of years ago now, Jack M Zufelt explained in his book and seminars 'The DNA Of Success' that motivation has to come from inside, not influenced from outside. He introduced the concept of 'core desires' and how to identify them and how to evaluate them. The bottom line is that only core desires with a rating of 99 or 100 (out of 100) are likely to deliver enough motivation to fuel success. Which is why when external influences, training, books and so on are not congruent with those top-rated core desires, motivation is likely to be short-lived or not experienced at all. Of course Jack Zufelt' work goes into a lot more depth. Helpful both for understanding yourself and others. #motivation #success

4 年Yes!!! Love everything about this. I, too, love working out in the AM. though admittedly with 2020 having been what it is and the gyms being unavailable for so long, I’m all over the place with my workouts. That said, I’m still dedicated bc working out helps keep me sane - mentally and emotionally. So I’ve been more open to letting it happen more fluidly! I have a routine but it’s more “get the workout in today”. However, your prompt reminded me how much I love the morning time. Maybe it’s time to go back.
