“To me, ideas are worth nothing unless executed. They are just a multiplier. Execution is worth millions.” - Steve Jobs

Regardless of your role in an organization (CEO, Director, Manager, or an individual contributor), execution is at the center of your success. However, just because it's critical doesn't mean everyone does it well or knows precisely what it means. ‘Execution’ is simply the carrying out of a plan, order, or course of action. After observing high-performing individuals, both peers and leaders who have been an inspiration to me, the gap between ideas and actual outcomes is execution.

As a leader, it's important to focus on getting results and executing on your plans. Here are a few tips to help you become more results- and execution-focused:

  1. Set clear and measurable goals: Clearly define what you want to achieve and establish measurable metrics to track your progress. This will help you stay focused on what's important and measure your success.
  2. Prioritize and delegate: As a leader, it's important to prioritize your tasks and delegate effectively. This allows you to focus on the most important tasks and ensures that the work is being done efficiently.
  3. Communicate effectively: Clear and effective communication is crucial for getting things done. Make sure to clearly communicate your expectations and goals to your team and keep them informed of progress and changes.
  4. Stay organized: Keep your schedule and your work environment organized to help you stay focused and on track. Use tools like calendars, to-do lists, and project management software to keep yourself organized.
  5. Lead by example: As a leader, your actions set the tone for your team. By consistently demonstrating a strong focus on results and execution, you can inspire your team to do the same.
  6. Hold yourself and your team accountable: Establish a culture of accountability in your team by holding yourself and your team members accountable for delivering results. This helps to ensure that everyone is working towards the same goals and that progress is being made.

Relentless execution will always prevail over great ideas. Being an execution and results-oriented leader is beneficial for not only yourself, but your entire organization. By implementing these strategies, you can become a more results- and execution-focused leader and drive your team to success. In summary, being an execution-focused leader means having a clear vision, being accountable, effectively delegating, and being adaptable. By embodying these qualities, you will be able to lead your team to success and achieve your goals.

Look back through the list above and choose one or two items you want to intentionally improve on this month. Your colleagues will thank you.
