How to be more intentional with our career?

With everything that we have going on, I know it’s hard to carve out time for career planning. At times it may feel that we are so busy working, that we can't take any time away to think more objectively about what we want from our job.

However, we need to invest time into understanding our career and life needs or else we can find ourselves in jobs we don't enjoy. I often say to to my clients that it is crazy we work for 40+ years but we don’t take time to think about what we want from our jobs.

Being intentional about your career means taking charge, setting goals, and making deliberate choices that align with your passions and ambitions.

The benefits are immense: greater job satisfaction, increased productivity, and a clearer path toward success. So, let's dive into some actionable tips to help you navigate your career with purpose and intention.

1. Seek a Mentor

One of the most powerful ways to be intentional about your career is by seeking guidance from a mentor. A mentor can offer invaluable insights, advice, and support as you navigate your professional journey. Look for someone who has achieved success in your field and shares your values and aspirations. Build a relationship based on trust and mutual respect, and don't be afraid to ask for guidance when you need it. A mentor can help you set goals, overcome challenges, and unlock your full potential.

2. Put in Time for a Performance Review

Regular performance reviews are a key tool for being intentional about your career. I know they can be time-consuming and not always something we look forward to creating, however it is useful to have at least 1 a year. Use this time to reflect on your accomplishments, strengths, and areas for improvement. Be proactive in seeking feedback from your manager and colleagues, and use it as an opportunity to set new goals and create a plan for growth. By actively engaging in the performance review process, you demonstrate your commitment to continuous improvement and career advancement.

3. Arrange a Skip Level

In addition to receiving feedback from your direct supervisor, consider arranging a skip-level meeting with higher-level managers or executives. This can provide you with a broader perspective on your performance and career trajectory within the organization. Use this opportunity to showcase your accomplishments, discuss your long-term goals, and seek advice on how to advance your career. Building relationships with leaders at all levels of the organization can open doors to new opportunities and help you strategically navigate your career path.

4. Set Goals

Setting clear, measurable goals is essential for being intentional about your career. Take the time to define what success looks like for you and create a roadmap to get there. Break down your goals into smaller, actionable steps, and track your progress along the way. Whether it's advancing to the next level in your career, learning new skills, or pursuing a passion project, having goals gives you a sense of direction and purpose. Regularly review and adjust your goals as needed to stay focused and motivated.

5. See a Career Coach

Finally, consider working with a career coach to take your intentional career planning to the next level. A career coach can provide personalised guidance, support, and accountability as you navigate your professional journey. Whether you're exploring new career paths, seeking work-life balance, or looking to overcome career obstacles, a coach can help you clarify your goals and develop a plan to achieve them. Investing in yourself and your career through coaching can lead to greater clarity, confidence, and success.

Don’t forget that I have my new small group programme starting next Friday. I am looking for a couple more mid to senior-level career changers to go on a 12 week journey with me. You can book in time below (in comments) to have a free phone chat with me to find out more about the programme.
