How a misdiagnosis of Covid-19 could have costed my dad's life!

Please note :

This is a very specific incident and I don't intend to malign the COVID warriors because I have friends and family members who are also serving as doctors on the frontline.

I was hesitant to post this on social media as it disturbed me and family for the past few weeks. However, I felt people should know about the sad reality of certain super-specialty hospitals.

My dad complained about mild fever for almost two weeks and got himself tested for COVID in Yashoda Hospital, Nehru Nagar, Ghaziabad on 2nd Sept. His report was negative. But he was still not feeling well.

As per advice from the doctor, he got himself admitted to the same hospital so that thorough tests could be conducted on him. His reports suggested that he was suffering from a rare scrub typhus disease and his treatment began.

In the next 5 days, while I was tending to him, I saw a sharp decline in his health and he was barely able to speak or breathe.

I asked the doctor if he has changed the line of treatment. He parroted the name of the disease to me without giving me a clear reason or logic behind the deterioration.

I was alarmed not only with the tonality of the doctor but also with the negligence of support staff in maintaining basic hygiene in pandemic (to begin with they were wearing masks nose down). I got my dad discharged from the hospital against the wish of the doctor that very day {I failed to understand the reason behind his self-assured hubris} and got him admitted to BLK Hospital, Pusa Road.

To my amazement, he was tested COVID positive during pre-screening and the doctor told me that his lungs were critically damaged to the extent that a loss of one extra day in Yashoda Hospital could have cost him his life. . Not only that, I and family had exposure as well because of that misdiagnosis and it was a tremendous mental ordeal for all of us!

Luckily it was a narrow escape for my dad.

My only request to you would be to stay careful of all such things in times of pandemic.

P.S. He is discharged from the hospital some days back and is on a path to recovery which will take him 4-5 months.
