How Miracles Happen

Story of the Week: "How Miracles Happen"
Maria had gained a reputation for being one of the last employees to arrive at the office in the morning and the first to leave in the afternoon.
As a result, no-one was surprised when, one day, she submitted her resignation, nor did they imagine that she would act differently or even better when she joined a gaming company, located coincidentally only a few blocks away from her first employer.
I first heard about Maria from a friend of mine who, for his own reasons, decided to quit the same firm as she had and, soon afterwards, found himself being interviewed by the same gaming company where his former colleague now worked.
“When the Head of HR saw on my CV that I had worked with Maria, he asked me if I knew of any others like her. And he proudly explained that she was an exemplary employee: extremely diligent, dedicated and conscientious. The first to arrive and the last to leave the office. I was shocked to hear about this apparently miraculous transition!” he told me.
I have long believed that a positive company culture – one in which employees are given responsibility and empowered to make decisions – encourages engagement, which, in turn, elevates overall levels of morale and productivity.
Engaged employees want to go the extra mile in pursuit of the company’s objectives because they share those objectives. The relationship between engagement and performance eventually goes beyond individual boundaries and spreads to colleagues, exerting a positive influence on the whole company.

Maria's story serves as a reminder of the profound influence that our work environment can have on our behaviour and should encourage business leaders to make a constant effort to motivate and reward their employees within a company culture that provides compelling reasons for engagement, loyalty and a genuine willingness to work hard. That’s how ‘miracles’ can happen.

On changing employers, have you ever undergone a ‘transformation’ similar to Maria’s?

5 个月Spot on. I’ve been both an employee and an employer and see it from both perspectives. There are still so many outdated systems and beliefs out there but once we understand that we can create the environment for our employees/kids/etc to thrive, we can take responsibility and ownership of the process to truly make way for them to blossom.

6 个月Bang on. Work environment or work culture plays a massive role in the motivation of an employee. And I reckon work culture is driven top to down. Messy top management creates demotivation and confusion among employees. About how to change the world, theoretically sounds good but again we rely on the culture around us. Liked the article.
