How to Mind Map ?

Despite years of study and attending numerous schools and executive courses, I've consistently found myself in a challenging situation when it comes to taking notes and organizing the clutter of my memory. My goal has always been to neatly categorize this information in my mental "drawer," striving to retain as much as possible or to recall it effectively over time. However, as I've grown older, I've realized that the techniques I've employed have not fully met my needs.

This issue persisted despite the digitization of note-taking. The lack of a proper filing and retrieval system only compounded my frustration. Whether it was paper notes or digital ones made using various apps like Apple Notes, Word, Text, Noteshelf, PDF Reader, or drawing apps, the solution seemed elusive. In hindsight, I understand that the problem wasn't with the software; rather, it was with my approach to processing information. Over the years, I was conditioned to think and absorb information linearly, not realizing that our brains naturally process information in a radiant, non-linear manner. Additionally, as visual creatures, we are not fully utilizing our brain's capacity to absorb and present information.

During my time at the Harvard Business School's General Management Program in 2018-2019, they taught us, the executives, several relevant skills to aid in our studies and preparation for returning to our businesses. These skills included networking (even for an introvert), case study preparation, note-taking using the split-page format, presenting using "tripling" and synthesis techniques, listening, questioning, presenting an argument, critical thinking in discussions, optimal learning at HBS, and mind-mapping. All of these skills were imparted to the 135 executives by Ms. Genet Jeanjean MA MEd .

Throughout the course, I primarily used mind maps to dissect case studies. Here are some examples I can share

Excerpts of my effort dissecting HBS Cases using mind map.

What is this Mind-Map?

Many ways to explain, but I have managed to summarize them into my own Mind-Map of "what is mind-map" here.

Mind Map Basic

It is derived from the Tony Buzan's, the very creator of Mind Map, book

The book

A Mind Map is a user-friendly system designed for thought processing that aids in managing information, linking ideas, and organizing thoughts through a graphic organizer. It is distinguished by its use of colors, keywords, lines, images, a central theme, and branches. The Mind Map technique is versatile, employed for a range of activities including planning, studying for exams, organizing, preparing for writing and speaking, note-taking, project management, and personally, it has been invaluable for quick mental preparation, such as for elevator pitches. The Buzan Organization holds the registered trademark for Mind Mapping.

To distill the essence of my basic understanding of Mind Mapping:

  • Central Image: A strong, central visual that encapsulates the main idea.
  • Use of Color: Colors are employed to differentiate and highlight connections.
  • Print Single Keywords: Each branch is labeled with a single, significant keyword.
  • Branches: These are curved and connected, emanating from the central image.
  • Pictures Throughout: Visuals are integrated across the map to enhance memory and understanding.

Hands-On Activity During the Class:

In an engaging classroom activity, around eighty participants were encouraged to create a Mind Map on paper using colorful pencils. The task was to reflect and map out their personal identity. This exercise was not only a moment of self-reflection but also an opportunity for participants to consider how others might perceive them and what aspects of their personality may intrigue others. Here is an example of one of their first mind maps (credit to Asayari Puspita Gutama )

In the class, I demonstrated my own personal Mind Map, created using tools such as Ayoa For Kids, Ayoa, and MindNode. While it's unlikely that the formal presentation of our CVs will deviate from the traditional formats seen on platforms like LinkedIn, a self Mind Map offers a unique perspective. It allows individuals to view themselves as dynamic beings with potentially limitless potential and areas for growth. It provides a reflective overview of where they have been, where they are, and where they could go, helping them to gauge their position between feelings of impostor syndrome and excessive self-awareness.

My goal is for them to see themselves as their Creator intended, recognizing the purpose placed upon them in this life's journey. The Mind Map serves as a mirror, not just for self-assessment, but also as a reminder of their intrinsic value and the unique path they are on.

Using Ayoa For Kids: Confusing? Missing more Images, and not using higher and lesser importance distinctions, keyword not on line.
Not So Confusing Right ? A better example
I don't like this as this: so many wrongs committed here, despite using the handsomely paid software.

Toronata, thank you for this wonderful article that summarizes your learning from class: practical and useful skills you can use at work, not just at Harvard. Your maps are great - a sign of clear thinking : )
