How Mental Health Conditions are Portrayed in Films
How much do we know about mental health? How vastly have we experienced mental health problems in our lives? Although some conditions are fairly improbable and harder to find, a lot of these are increasingly more common, and we are bound to encounter them sooner or later.
This is where Media comes into play. Especially movies, which we tend to take quite seriously. The role that cinema plays in education has been questioned many times, but like it or not, a big portion of what we know about the world we learn through movies.
Over two thousand films come out every year, worldwide, and about half of these touch on the topic of mental sanity or downright deal with mental health problems. How representative are these movies of real instances of Alzheimer's, chronic depression, anxiety, or dementia?
