How Meditation and Breathwork Calmed My ADHD Symptoms
Today, I’m sharing my personal experiences of finding breathwork and how it has helped me find peace, focus and how it alleviates my symptoms of ADHD.
An ADHD brain feels like it’s running with 43 browser tabs open at once.?
Let's face it, being a tech recruiter with ADHD is like trying to solve a Rubik's cube while riding a unicycle. In a hurricane.?
This was the norm for me. For years, I thought this was just how life had to be. Chaotic, overwhelming, and fuelled by a tightrope act of juggling all the things.
Then about 5 years ago I discovered meditation and breathwork which was the catalyst to improving my personal growth and well being.?
????♂? Meditation and breathwork helps me to focus and move forward and leave baggage behind. It allowed me to release things that I couldn’t let go of before.
As I started to practise meditation and read the scientific research to back up the process I also discovered breathwork. It was a game changer to combine both practices for me and the knowledge I’d learnt from reading up on the subject really helped me to alleviate the chaos in my mind.?
As I reflect on what meditation has taught me I realise how much of an impact it has had on my life - for the better.
Working in recruitment where it’s fast-paced and I have a brain that is easily distracted and my thoughts can go off on tangents.
?? The first few meditation sessions were challenging – my mind raced, and sitting still felt impossible. Yet, something kept drawing me back.
As I committed to a regular practice, I began to notice subtle changes. The constant chatter in my mind began to quiet. I found myself reacting less and responding more thoughtfully to life's challenges.
My sleep improved, and a sense of calm started to permeate my days.? But it wasn't just about feeling good. Understanding the science behind meditation was eye opening! I was fascinated by the measurable impacts on the brain and body. Studies show meditation increases grey matter density, reduces inflammation, and improves emotional regulation.
At first, I was sceptical - I’d been breathing my entire life. But trust me, this is next-level stuff.? Breathwork was a game changer:
?? Laser Focus: Who knew that a few minutes of intentional breathing could cut through the mental fog that was cluttering up my brain? Suddenly, I could zone in and calm the whizzing thoughts and slow everything down.
?? Reduction in Stress: a few deep breaths and a grounding exercise really helps me to focus on what I’m doing and removes the stressful feelings and allows me to quieten down the impulsive thought patterns.
?? Improved Communication: I made a conscious effort to listen intently to understand, not to listen to respond. I am so aware of how I used to jump into the conversation to add my own part of the story that I would often miss out on what I was being told by others.?
?? Better Decision Making: With a calmer mind, I'm making smarter choices and not rushing.
??Increased Productivity: I'm getting more done in less time, without feeling like I'm about to short-circuit.?
Breathwork really feels like I’ve unlocked a treasure chest to create calm and a more peaceful existence for me to excel at.
For me the Wim Hof method has had the most impact for me. If you’d like to learn more about this method then get in touch or buy his book!
I’m so much better at controlling my emotions, stress levels and my focus is much improved.?

It has also had a positive impact on my physical health as well as my self awareness and emotional intelligence.?
Yes I still experience symptoms but I have my treasure chest of tools that now helps me to alleviate my busy brain. ?Some days, my practice feels effortless; other days, it's a struggle. But the compounding effects over time have been transformative.
Getting Started
To those considering starting a meditation practice, I encourage you to approach it with an open mind and patience. The benefits may not be immediate, but they are worth it!?
If you're just starting out, here are a couple of things that really helped me:
It’s also worth noting that my ADHD brain still loves to take me on wild adventures. But now, instead of feeling like I'm constantly drowning in a sea of notifications and deadlines, I have a life raft.
It has truly changed my life for the better, and I believe it has the power to do the same for anyone willing to give it a chance.
Send me a message if you want to hear more about my breathwork and meditation journey or share your own experiences.
If you're interested in learning more about breathwork and meditation I am looking at hosting an event to discuss methods, my research and the books I've read then get in touch and I will plan something for later this year.
The changing face of recruitment
When I started back in recruitment nearly 30 years ago it was a very male dominated industry. I recall walking a female colleague through a client’s male dominated office.?
The office came to a standstill and you could hear a pin drop as the office turned round to look at us.? It was unusual for a woman to be in the office.?
I recall it making me feel uncomfortable, and I can't comment on how my colleague must have felt with all those eyes on her!?
It is crazy when I think back to those days and I’m pleased that times have changed a lot since then.?
It is also part of the reason why I’m so passionate about pacing women - and possibly my childhood of being surrounded by women (my 6 sisters taught me a lot!)
Increased focus on equal opportunities and anti-discrimination policies has created a more equitable workforce. But there is always more work to do.?
As I reflect back on the early days of my career I know that my dream of placing women is now a reality - and this is just the start!

1 个月It's great to see how meditation and breath-work are becoming more mainstream in the world of work and beyond. They have helped me immeasurably over the last twenty-five years and it truly is a journey that never ends. The event later in the year sounds a great idea.
Thank you Supriti Singh for your insights today and some additions I will try with my meditation from now on.

1 个月Thanks so much for sharing your experience. Really interesting to read! We've just started a series of breathwork sessions at Simmons with The Breath Space Ltd as we're trying to encourage more wellbeing activities as the norm instead of an afterthought or extra.
