How to Measure Your Face When Choosing Glasses

Blending style and function, eyewear are the perfect accessory - but only if they're placed exactly where you want them. Glasses are far less attractive if they slide off your face every few minutes. To make sure you're buying the right frame for a snug fit without any room for error, why not take your own measurements? With just a few simple steps, you can order a set that's ideally sized on plan, and it won't fall off anytime soon!

Look at your face

When shopping for glasses, it's important to consider the width of your face. Before going to a store or ordering online, it is highly recommended that you measure the width of your face and compare it to established standards for eyeglass sizes. This way, you can ensure that your glasses fit perfectly and provide optimum comfort.

Measure the width between temples

Measuring the width between the temples is a fairly simple process that requires the use of soft measuring tape.

  1. To start, start by targeting your temples, which are the small bumps on the sides of your forehead, just above each eyebrow. Place one end of the tape measure at the outermost point of one temple, and stretch it to the outermost point of the other temple. Make sure to keep the tape as level as possible and see if there is any difference in its width. Once you've done this, note down the measurements that should be in inches or centimeters. This is your temple size!
  2. To ensure the best fit, you should use the temple-to-temple width to determine the overall width of your glasses. This includes the frames and the bridges connecting them. The measurements here should match your temple measurements as closely as possible.

  • For example, if your temple-to-temple width is 132mm (5.2 in ), the ideal eyeglass width for you would be between 130-134mm (5.1-5.3 in).

  1. If you're trying to determine the ideal lens width, simply take your nose and overall width measurements into account. Subtract 6 mm (0.24 in) from the total width plus your bridge size - voila! You can now precisely measure the width of your lenses to fit you. In terms of lenses, they are usually between 50-60mm (2.0-2.4 in) in size.

Measure your nose

To find the right nose bridge width and position, use a mirror or take a side selfie. Double-check to determine if the bridge is tall or low, narrow or wide—those measurements will determine how far apart each shot should be.

  • To find the perfect bridge size, first determine whether it is below or above the pupil. If the bridge of the nose is lower than your eyes, choose a frame with a lens spacing of 16-18 mm (0.63-0.71 in) for a comfortable fit. Conversely, if you require a higher position for optimal comfort and visual clarity, choose a position of 19-21 mm (0.75-0.83 in).

  • To assess the width of the bridge of the nose, look at the distance between the eyes. If they are close together, your nose is likely narrow. Conversely, if they appear far apart, your bridge is likely wide.
  • If you have a narrow nose, look for frames with a bridge in the 14-18mm (0.55-0.71in) range; on the other hand, if you have a wider nose, choose glasses with a bridge over 18mm (0.71in).

When deciding on the width of the bridge and its location, remember to take the thickness of the frame into account. The thicker it is, the more room you need for extra support and then widen the bridge width accordingly. By taking this detail into account when making eyeglass frames, you can ensure that any added weight from thicker frames isn't too much to bear.

  • If you prefer a thicker frame, but have a nose bridge size between 16-18mm (0.63-0.71in), we recommend 19mm (0.75 in). On the other hand, if you have a larger bridge size and need a thinner frame, then an 18mm (or possibly smaller) bridge should do the trick!

Regardless of the width of your nose bridge, your glasses should match the unique shape of your face. If you have a high nose bridge, be sure to choose glasses that are at eyebrow level. But if it's lower, find a frame with a bridge just below the brow line! With this helpful tip when choosing eyewear, you're sure to find the perfect style to suit your face shape and look great every day.

Match glasses to your face shape

Do you know how to determine your face shape? First, pin your hair away from your face and look in the mirror. Then trace the contour of the face from the top of the head down until it meets the jawline. Finally, figure out which silhouette is most like a circle, square, oval or heart!

  • For round faces, you'll notice fuller cheeks and an even forehead-to-jawline ratio. For a square face, the strength of the jaw line and the balanced width between the two halves of the face are prominent features. An oval shaped person will reveal narrow cheekbones and a small chin. The heart-shaped man has a broad forehead and a tapering chin.

Eyeglass arms or temples are the two pieces that attach to the frame and fit over the ears. The temples or temple pieces that fit on the frame and fit on either side of the ear usually come in three standard sizes: 135, 140 and 145mm (4.7-5.9 in). If the overall width is wider than usual, choose longer temples as they will provide a better fit!

  • If your glasses are wider, please choose a temple size of 145mm (5.7 in) or larger. Conversely, for smaller width, choose 135–140 mm (5.3–5.5 in). Wearing them can be uncomfortable and their temples stick out of your ears. Choose a frame with shorter temples to prevent further discomfort!

To perfectly match the lens shape to your face, you can choose from square frames for round, oval and heart-shaped faces. A square face looks great with round or oval frames.

Conclusion

Measuring your face for glasses is a great way to ensure you find the perfect frame. With accurate measurements, you can be confident that any pair of glasses will fit your face comfortably and look stylish. For an accurate measurement, consider the width and height of the eyes in relation to the bridge of the nose and the length of the temples. Also, be sure to keep an eye out for the frame shape that best suits your facial features. By considering all of these factors when shopping for new eyeglass frames, you can guarantee a successful purchase every time!
