How may we teach people to Learn, Unlearn and Relearn in order to cope better with the pace of change?
In today's society, technology and knowledge are moving at such a rapid pace that it is getting eternally harder for people to maintain pace. Within corporate organisations, learning functions are grappling with the challenge of ensuring that staff are receiving learning that is meaningful and impactful whilst dealing with all this change. One of the critical failings of learning and development is that the majority of learning is still developed with methodologies of knowledge retention which is fast becomming a redundant form of learning. When 90% of the world’s knowledge has been created in the last 5 years, knowledge retention strategies soon will no longer be relevant.
To deal with this challenge, how does learning and development help organisations to Learn, Unlearn and Relearn?
- What may L&D do to firstly teach people how to learn in this modern era?
- What is required to un-learn critical skills/thinking in order to make capacity for new information?
- How may you Relearn in a sustainable manner to use just in time approaches in accessing content when and where you need it?
- Finally what is needed to hold all of this together in a manner that is sustainable and not overwhelming for organisations.
I'm running a critical analysis Think Tank here in Melbourne in early September designed to unearth some answers to these core questions, and to create a pathway for organisations to undertake in addressing some of these issues. In the lead up to this Think Tank I've asked the participants to talk to their networks and gain further ideas so that we can have the thinking of many to help us tackle these questions. So in this spirit I'm asking you all as part of my network to contribute your thinking.
If you want to contribute your thoughts then please add them to this post. I'm looking forward to seeing what innovative ideas come through!

8 年CISCO is letting go of 5,500 people because their capabilities do not align with where the company is going. We use HBDI and whole Brain Thinking to explain how a shift in thinking needs to occur with the new technology forcing people away fron the back end processes and BACK engaging with customer on a more cerebral and relationship-based level. We also show how some people (based on their thinking preferences) will find that unlearning and learning more challenging than other

8 年What a great day we had at the Think Tank! Really insightful conversations ignited by the group which through the skilful facilitation of James Merchant lead to some divergent and convergent thinking over several ideations. With a small team of 15, we unearthed over 300 insights/thoughts on the topic and distilled these into over 100 unique ideas that can be actioned immediately or explored in further depth. Going into this Think Tank it was obvious that this was never going to be an easy challenge to solve. We focussed the discussion and thinking around: - Creating the right conditions for learning - The process of unlearning and helping people to let go of the old - The need for re-enforcement loops These were dependent on elements associated with Leadership, Environment, Skills and Mindset. There is more work needed to be done to formulate specific strategies around the right things to focus on within these elements to address the original key question. I also need to spend more time synthesising the ideas and insights gathered so far and I will share deeper information on the above soon. So where to from here? Well there is a huge need to continue to gather further insight. So in light of this an additional 2 Think Tanks will be scheduled for: - October 6th – Melbourne - October 25th – Sydney I will be reaching out again to my network for contributors to these Think Tanks so if you are passionate about the topic, or know anyone that would provide great diversity of thought and would like to be involved then please reach out to me. Again a big thank you to those involved in the session yesterday here in Melbourne for your time, energy and thinking.

8 年Essentially we need to discern the essence of the information we require to resolve the issue on hand and know where and how to find that information quickly.

8 年People should have some fun when learning, they will have their thinking stretched beyond organized knowledge to imagination.A kitten plays with a ball of string to train itself for hunting a mouse. We need a big ball of"networks and relationships" that will enhance our intelligence, encourage trust and reciprocity and shape the quality of our learning and so too the quality of our hunt. Organizations should break the habit of "learning by repetition" in order to have a room for people's emotional intelligence.Learning by repetition is a constant effort will force management to live captive to their past beliefs.Like the kitten which trained itself to hunt a mouse, organizations should learn how to hunt elephants. They should learn to dance and have fun to get people not only work together but also think together.
