“Social media creates communities, not markets.”— Don Schultz, marketing pioneer.
Social media is a vast, untamed land filled with opportunities for your business to thrive. But where do you start? And how can you maximize your social media ROI?
Follow these 4 steps…
Step 1: Monetize Your Social Media?
Studies show that if you use social media for your business, you’re 40% more likely to hit your targets.?
But… before you jump into creating content and posting every day, think of how you’ll monetize your social media channels. Are you selling your own product or service? Are you selling someone else's product as an affiliate? Are you becoming a brand ambassador for a company? Whatever it is, set a clear goal before diving into social media—the content comes after.?
What’s the point of posting every day if you don’t know why?
Step 2: Forget About Yourself
Stop talking about yourself. Nobody cares.?
No one cares about your daily routine or what you had for breakfast. And no one—I repeat, NO ONE—cares about the history of your company or what you’re looking forward to achieving in the new year. To quote Erik Qualman “Pushing a company agenda on social media is like throwing water balloons at a porcupine.”?
The only reason people will follow and engage with your content is if they find it entertaining or informative. If you want to get more followers, provide valuable content. Give them helpful tips, industry insights, or tell an entertaining story.
Step 3: Be Authentic
You can give your followers value-rich, informative, and entertaining content and simultaneously be authentic and add your personal touch to everything you post. Gary V said, "You have to understand your own personal DNA. Don’t do things because I do them, or Steve Jobs or Mark Cuban tried it. You need to know your personal brand and stay true to it.” So, don't try to copy anyone else's strategy; find what works for you and stick to it. If you love Star Wars, then end every post with “May the force be with you” for all I care. If you love cats, then share your cats' pictures, but don’t forget that it’s not the reason people follow you. Value comes first.?
Step 4: Reinvest (When) You Make Money
Once you start making money from your social media business, it's a good idea to put some of that back into your business. For example, you can buy better equipment for higher-quality videos or hire someone to help with content production. The idea is to keep your brand growing and evolving over time to stay competitive in this space.
Social media can be a game-changer for your business… but only if you use it right. To maximize your ROI, focus on 4 key areas: monetizing your brand, giving value to your audience, being authentic, and putting some of the profits back into the business. Do that, and you’ll be able to fully leverage the power of social media and take advantage of all its opportunities!
