How many people do you want to reach?

How many people do you want to reach?

Your book is a representation of more than just your knowledge capital. It is a part of your soul. A piece of your story. Your lasting legacy.

To make an impact, it has to reach people. That brings us to the word many authors dread.

Sales.

Sales are nothing more than your audience's perception of the value that you provide.

The more books you sell, the more people you reach. The more lives you change. The bigger your legacy. As authors, we have to work on some mindset fundamentals.

Know that you were called to write your book.

There are people who need to read your book.

It may surprise you that there are a lot of people who can learn from your experience. People struggling to navigate challenges you have already conquered,

To help them, you need to reach them. You have to do something to CONNECT with them.

This connection is part of the magic that makes them pick up that book in the store or click on the cover on-line.

In marketing, we call that CONVERSION.

What does this mean for authors. Conversion the act of turning a bookstore visitor or website visitor into a paying customer? There are a couple of methods we can use to help this conversion, but one of the first is the book cover.

A book cover is essentially a story telling piece of packaging. When we are pouring our heart and soul into the book, we don’t often think of packaging. But ignoring packing for your book is like going on a date or an interview and not dressing up for the occasion. If you are going to a wedding, you would first ask, “What is the dress code?” If you pitch up at a black tie event in your pyjama bottoms, you may be asked to leave.

Your cover is the first impression of your book. The one that is going to make the reader take action. It always breaks my heart when my C-suite clients, speakers and coaches spend so much time and resources investing in their careers and then let one thing ruin their first impression with readers.

You wouldn’t arrive at the wedding in a suit or dress you sewed by hand. So why wouldn’t you get a professional to design your book cover? Unless you are a graphic designer, you are dishonouring your reader and your message by not making this first impression count.

Is your legacy worth investing in?

The question of how many people you want to reach is a crucial one, as it defines the reach and influence of your work. Remember, each reader your book touches is a potential life changed and a piece of your legacy carried forward.?

This morning I was searching for book covers of specific celebrities for a keynote, where I could use the image of the cover and accredit it to Amazon. And some of the covers were shocking as you say. While another looked beautiful! Don't show up in your pajamas!

Writing a book is such a gift, not only to the author as they reflect on their journey, but also to readers who get to learn from the author's insights.
