How many October's?

How many October's?

Autumn is a season of change and renewal—a time to reset as we transition toward winter. Its beauty always amazes me, but for me, it’s also a season marked by both profound losses and transformative moments.

As I start a new leadership journey at Chevron, I’m reminded of a few guiding principles that shape how I view life, prioritize my time, and define what truly matters. In my last article, I spoke about the importance of the "ever-present" influences in our lives, and today, I want to share more on that perspective.

Five years ago, a dear friend shared a powerful idea that forever changed my outlook on life, personal priorities, and what I value most. It became my framework for honoring each day and finding purpose.

How many Octobers have you seen? How many do you have left?

These questions give us humbling answers.

Life is unpredictable. October 2019 brought me a particularly hard lesson when I lost that close friend and colleague to cancer, shaking me to my core. That experience pushed me to take ownership of how I spend each remaining October—and every day—with intention and purpose.

Since then, I’ve grown, becoming more thoughtful in how I spend my time and who I choose to share it with. I carry immense gratitude for the opportunities I’ve been given and the small circle of people with whom I share my life.

Each October has taught me:

  • Every day is a gift. Whether it’s a quiet sunrise, a meaningful conversation, or the comfort of a familiar routine, each moment holds something to appreciate.
  • Happiness is in the here and now. Rather than waiting for the next milestone, I’ve learned to find joy in the present. This mindset has kept me grounded and resilient, even during challenging times.
  • True leadership is rooted in appreciation. Leading with gratitude and an open heart inspires others to do the same, building teams and communities that uplift and support one another.

Answering that question daily, and reflecting on life’s fragility has become a sacred part of my daily routine, helping me focus on making the most of each day and honoring those around me.

Everyone is going through something. Let’s make a difference, live intentionally, and find joy in the small moments—they often hold the most meaning.

Let’s connect! I’d love to catch up.
