How many LinkedIn connections should you have?

How many LinkedIn connections should you have?

One of the key elements of LinkedIn is establishing connections. The question is how many connections should you have and who should you actually connect too?

I like to think of people connecting to me as an endorsement of my professional capability and they wanted to be part of my profession network.

I get asked often;

Does the number of connection I have in LinkedIn matter”

Believe me, it matters. Remember, the more first-degree connections you have, the more second- and third-degree connections you will also have, making you literally one connection away from millions of people.

And this is important because?

Imagine LinkedIn is a massive search engine. You need to remember that you’ll only show up in your first-, second-, and third-degree connections’ searches. Basically, this mean's in other words, if you’re not connected with individuals at these levels, you won’t come up in their search results. And only those three levels will show up in your or most importantly, people looking for your services searches.

So basically. if you want to be found on LinkedIn you need to connect. Most importantly you need to build those first level connections. This will of course exponentially increase your lower level connections and the possibility that the Algorithms built into LinkedIn will find you and place you near the top of the search results.

Now, the big question – should you accept connections requests from anyone and everyone?

Let me know your thoughts and maybe we will cover this later. Just remember, if you limit your connection to friends, family, work colleagues Etc., how many connection will you have?

As always, would love to hear your feedback, good or bad. Please also feel free to connect with me on LinkedIn. My connection information is in my profile.

I like connection requests from people who are in my industry. I even accept many from foreign countries who are in my industry. However, sometimes that opens up a snowball effect of odd requests and what look like fake profiles. I have a current request pending from a person who claims to work for a bank in Nigeria. Yes, the guy who sends you spam emails about the long lost relative who died and left you money in their bank wants to connect with me on LinkedIn. I can't wait until I get a connection request from someone who works for the UK Lottery... something I seem to win all the time without even buying a ticket...
