How Many Interviews is too Many?

The number of interviews a company conducts for a job can vary widely depending on several factors, including the company’s size, industry, culture, and the specific role being filled. Both approaches—conducting many interviews and having only a few—have their own benefits and disadvantages.

Finding a Balance

Many companies strive to find a balance between these two approaches to optimize the hiring process. Some strategies to achieve this balance include:

  • Structured Interviewing: Implementing a structured interviewing process where each round has a specific focus, and standardized questions can help ensure thorough evaluation without requiring excessive rounds.
  • Panel Interviews: Conducting panel interviews where multiple interviewers assess the candidate simultaneously can provide diverse perspectives in a shorter timeframe.
  • Pre-Interview Assessments: Using pre-interview assessments or assignments can help filter candidates early in the process, reducing the need for multiple rounds of interviews.

Ultimately, the ideal number of interviews depends on the company’s specific needs, the complexity of the role, and the available resources. Companies should aim to design a process that thoroughly evaluates candidates while maintaining efficiency and a positive candidate experience.

I was recently interviewed four times for the same position and then ultimately declined. Three zoom meetings and one in-person interview. When I was invited to interview in person, I thought this was my breakthrough. Disappointing when companies put people through this ordeal giving them false hope.
