How Many Interviews Does It Take to Land a Job?

There's been a lot of talk on LinkedIn about companies requiring more and more and more interviews to land a job.

Based on what I've seen, it almost seems like 7 interviews is the norm nowadays.

But I wanted to find out for sure.

So I ran a poll on LinkedIn, asking people how many interviews it took to land their most recent job.

Before I get into the results, a few caveats:

  • This is not a scientific survey.
  • The number of interviews required to land a job likely varies based on the level of the position.
  • People may have different interpretations of what constitutes an interview. For example. one person may consider a recruiter screen an interview, and someone else may not.
  • If someone has been in a position for a while, the number of interviews required to land that job may have changed.

Without further ado, here are the results of the poll:


As you can see from the results, 78% of the 313 respondents report landing their most recent job with 1-3 interviews.

That's definitely a higher percentage than I expected.

At the same time, I'm personally disappointed that 23% of people needed 4-7+ interviews to land a job.

That, in my opinion, should be the exception, and only for very high-level positions.

2-3 interviews should be the sweet spot. One with the recruiter, one with the hiring manager, and one with the team. Shut it down. Some job seekers are telling me they're in 6-8 rounds of interviews with companies for a very standard compensation package. That's gratuitous.
