How many Emails do you receive daily? Is Email a good collaboration and communication tool?

??How many Emails do you receive daily? 50? 100? 300? 500? +1000?!!

Recently, I've had numerous conversations with my friends in the freight and logistics industry, and one common complaint keeps coming up: the relentless flood of emails inundating our inboxes every day.?

It's time we address this issue head-on and challenges ourselves to rethink the way we manage our tasks and collaborate in a B2B environment.

Inspired by Cal Newport's thought-provoking book, "A World Without Email: Reimagining Work in an Age of Communication Overload," I'd like to share my experiences and initiate a discussion about the drawbacks of relying solely on email for our professional interactions.

Think about it: ??how many tasks did you successfully complete last week?

Email, as we know it, has become a double-edged sword. While originally intended for asynchronous communication, it has evolved into a seemingly never-ending stream of interruptions, leading to context switching and short-term task focus. If we use Email for a B2B collaboration, Email doesn't give us a structured workflow and clear visibility of the collaboration. As Newport describes it, this "hyperactive hive mind" workflow not only hampers our productivity but also affects our overall happiness and well-being.?

However, the good news is that we have alternatives! Newport offers practical strategies in his book to help us reduce email overload and create a healthier work-life balance. Here's what we can do:

  • Use email only for important messages: Let's reserve our inboxes for essential communication and find other tools for less important communication.
  • Set clear boundaries: Establish dedicated time slots for checking and responding to emails rather than allowing them to infiltrate every moment of our workday.
  • Embrace collaboration tools: Project management platforms, Collaboration platforms, video conferencing, and phone calls can streamline teamwork and enhance communication, reducing the need for excessive email exchanges.
  • Employ email management techniques: Utilize filters, folders, and automation to prioritize and categorize emails, making it easier to focus on what truly matters.

By adopting these strategies, we can regain control over our inboxes, increase productivity, and ultimately improve our overall professional performance.

If you've ever felt overwhelmed by email, I highly recommend reading "A World Without Email." It's an eye-opening book that presents a compelling case for reimagining how we work. Let's challenge the status quo and explore new avenues of B2B collaboration that go beyond the limitations of email. Together, we can usher in a new era of efficient and fulfilling work experiences.?
