How to Manage Mental Health in the Winter Months

Most people are no stranger to the concept or feeling of seasonal depression, especially in State College. When the sun doesn’t come out as often and the outside winds start to feel like a slap in the face. The winter months make it harder for humans to get fresh air and enjoy being outside. Which consequently affects our mood and motivation to keep going.?

As students at Penn State, winter can be one of the hardest times of the year. Not only are our travels to class and work more difficult, but so are the activities we do for fun. Some of us slip into a cycle of dreading our commitments that force us to go outside intensely, making life unfortunately duller.

CommAgency wants to remind everyone that although winter brings some brutalities, it also offers an opportunity to prioritize extra sleep and simpler relaxation rituals. The low temperatures and snowstorms should encourage you to take time to yourself indoors. Instead of rushing to enjoy all of the outside activities available in warmer months, you can slow down and get cozy under your covers. Maybe watch the movies you’ve been wanting to see or bake that banana bread you’re always thinking about.?

The seasons bring balance into our lives. Without winter, we wouldn’t appreciate the summer sun as much. Winter is a time to stay inside and recharge. It allows us a chance to dedicate time to keeping up with our chores or work and invest time into the people you can enjoy simpler things with. We need winter so that we’re prepared and energized for everything the summer months bring.

CommAgency urges you to utilize winter productively. See the importance of fixing your sleep schedule, getting work done, and staying warm by simply relaxing.
