How to Manage Generation Z: Tips for Millennials in Leadership Positions

As a millennial, you're likely used to being managed by people who are older than you. But what happens when the tables are turned, and you find yourself in a management position over members of Generation Z? To answer that, let's first look at what sets Generation Z apart from the other generations in the workforce.

What Makes Generation Z Different?

Generation Z is the first generation to grow up with technology. They are digital natives who have never known a world without the internet, social media, and smartphones. As a result, they are incredibly comfortable with technology and tend to be early adopters of new trends. Gen Z is often described as being more entrepreneurial than any other generation. They are constantly looking for new ways to create and add value.?

So how can Millennials manage Gen Z effectively? Here are some tips:

Be flexible and provide constant feedback

Because Gen Z is used to getting their information instantly and constantly being connected, they expect the same from their managers. They want managers who are accessible and willing to communicate via text or Slack rather than email or face-to-face meetings. As a manager, you must be flexible in your communication style and ready to meet them where they're. Gen Zers also expect constant feedback, both positive and constructive, to improve their performance at work. Make sure you give them regular feedback, so they know what they're doing well and what areas need improvement.

Be Transparent

This generation appreciates transparency from their managers. They want to know why decisions are being made and what the short-term and long-term goals are. So ensure you always communicate openly and honestly with them about your expectations and company goals.?

Keep things interesting

Since Gen Z are used to having constant stimulation thanks to social media and smartphones, they can get bored quickly; therefore, find ways to keep things fresh and exciting if you want to retain their attention (and their respect). One way to do this is by giving them assignments outside their comfort zone; not only will this challenge them, but it will also help them learn and grow in their roles. Try incorporating fun activities into your team-building exercises; games and puzzles are always a hit with this generation!

Encourage Them to Use Their Voices

Generation Z is very vocal about what they believe in and are not afraid to use their voices to effect change. As a manager, you should encourage your Gen Z employees to speak up and share their ideas. This will help create a more dynamic and innovative work environment and help your employees feel like they're part of something larger.

The bottom line is that business leaders need to understand the unique cultural values that this group holds dear if they want to manage Generation Z successfully. With a few key considerations, any manager can begin to unlock the potential of their Gen Z employees and set them up for success in the years ahead.?
