How to Make your Workout Work for you

How to Make your Workout Work for you

The internet’s a fantastic invention, and now we can do all sorts of activities from home that wouldn’t have been an option just a few years ago. You can learn a language, play online chess or even join yoga classes, all from your own living room. When it comes to getting or staying fit, though, going to a live class could have the edge over going it alone. Here’s why.

As humans, many of us are not very good at motivating ourselves, particularly in the winter after a long day’s work. You may think you’ll find time for your Zumba class, but there are lots of distractions at home demanding your attention. If you’re only just beginning your fitness journey working out at home can be a great start and means you don’t have to worry about what you wear! In the longterm, though, joining a live class has a whole range of benefits over just exercising by yourself.

A study by the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine found that people who attended workout classes had lower stress levels and a general overall better quality of life. The study divided participants (medical students) into three groups. Group A took at least one exercise class a week, group B worked out alone or with just one other partner and group C didn’t work out at all. The study ran for 12 weeks, with participants answering questions every four weeks. Group A showed significantly lower stress levels and a generally improved quality of life, while group B showed only an improved quality of life. The control group, C, showed no improvement on either measure.

While working out by yourself at home is cheaper and more flexible, researchers believe that the group aspect of gyms is what offers the increased benefits. Exercising in a class is more motivating and there’s the added advantage of the social aspect, which can also help to lower stress levels.

Grabbing a coffee post-workout is a great way of relaxing and chilling down while chatting with friends, and we think it’s just as important a part of your regime as the exercise itself.
