Imagine your resume is so clear and compelling that recruiters fight to call you first. It’s not a pipe dream. It’s possible - if - you know how to connect the dots for hiring managers.?
Because they sure won’t do it for you…
Your resume is more than a list of past jobs—it's a strategic document that should instantly connect your valuable experience and skills to your target job. The key? Don't make hiring managers work to see your fit. Instead, connect the dots for them. Here's how to create a resume that catches attention and compels action.
1. Decode the Job Description
Before you even touch your resume, you need to become an expert on the job you're applying for. This is why having a target job (or two) is so important. Without a clear direction, you’ll miss a foundational piece of the puzzle that will get your foot in the door.?
Carefully read the job description and highlight the following:
- High-Priority Hard Skills
- Required Years of Experience
- Key Responsibilities
- Preferred Qualifications
Spot the Hidden Needs:
Look beyond the bullet points. What underlying problems is this role meant to solve??
Is the company growing rapidly??
Facing industry changes??
Here are five questions to help you determine the needs of the company.
Identify at least three major needs the employer has that this position will address. This insight will guide your entire application strategy.
2. Curate Your Achievements
Once you've identified the employer's key needs, select past achievements that align with these requirements. Present them using the CAR (Challenge-Action-Result) format:
- Challenge: What problem or situation did you face?
- Action: What specific steps did you take to address it?
- Result: What was the outcome of your actions?
Choosing Your Top 3 Accomplishments:
Select three achievements that best demonstrate your ability to meet the employer's needs (the ones you identified in the previous step). These are a must.
These will form the core of your "Signature Accomplishments" section, which I’ll explain in the next step.
3. Place Your Wins Front and Center
You’re going to create a "Signature Accomplishments" section.
Place your three key achievements at the top of your resume under your contact information and target job title. This ensures that even if a recruiter only skims your resume, they'll see your most impressive and relevant accomplishments.
Design Tips for Maximum Impact:
Consider using a shaded box or border to visually make this section stand out. For the results, use bold text to draw the eye to your concrete achievements.

4. Bridge the Gap with Transferable Skills
If you're changing industries or roles, focus on skills that transcend specific job titles. These might include leadership, project management, communication, or analytical skills.
Contextualizing Skills for a New Industry:
Don't just list these skills—show how they apply to the new role.?
For example: “Spearheaded a cross-functional team of 12 members from Marketing, Sales, and IT to launch a new CRM system, completing the project 2 weeks ahead of schedule and 10% under budget. This experience in managing complex, multi-departmental projects directly translates to the collaborative nature of product development roles."
The last line is key because it connects the dots for the hiring manager between the job seeker’s past experience and the target role. Anytime you can connect the dots for the hiring manager, you’re significantly increasing the chances they’ll deem you a fit for the role.?
5. Speak the Language: Industry-Specific Keywords
Replace jargon from your current industry with terms relevant to the target industry. This shows you've done your homework and can hit the ground running.
Here are some examples to inspire you:
From Finance to Tech:
From Journalism to Content Marketing:
From Retail to Project Management:

I love how these substitutions show adaptability. If you’re struggling to come up with transferable language, use Google or an AI program like Claude or ChatGpt to help you.
My Top 3 Keywords Strategy:
Identify three high-priority hard skills from the job description. Place these prominently near the top of your resume, just under your target job title. This immediately matches your resume (and skills) with the role's requirements, conveying that you are a fit for the role.?
Remember, you want every part of your resume to communicate that you’re a fit. You do that by connecting the dots between the role's requirements and your experience, accomplishments, and skills.
6. Let the Numbers Do the Talking
Even if your role isn't directly tied to revenue, you can still use numbers to illustrate your impact. One of my favorite questions is, “How much?” The other is, “How many?” Both questions apply to any aspect of your experience.?
- Percentage improvements in processes
- Number of people managed or trained
- Size of projects (in dollars or team members)
- Time saved or efficiency gained
Don’t forget comparisons, either. You can compare your previous performance to your current performance, as well as to the industry average, past company performance, peer performance, or competitor performance.
Metrics That Matter:
Choose metrics that are relevant to the role you're applying for. If you're aiming for a leadership position, emphasize team size and performance improvements. For a technical role, focus on efficiency gains or error reductions.
Here’s an example of what this could look like for an HR professional:
"Designed and implemented a new onboarding program that reduced new hire time-to-productivity from 8 weeks to 5 weeks, a 37.5% improvement. The program also increased employee retention rates by 22% in the first year, saving the company an estimated $300,000 in recruitment and training costs."
This example shows:
Here’s an example for a Software Engineer:
"Optimized the core algorithm of our main product, reducing average query response time from 2.5 seconds to 0.8 seconds. This 68% improvement in speed resulted in a 15% increase in daily active users and a 30% decrease in server load, saving the company $50,000 annually in infrastructure costs."
This example demonstrates:
Here’s another for a CFO:
“Led financial transformation at TechStartup, improving EBITDA margin from 15% to 23% in 2 years, reducing operating costs by $78M annually, and securing a $500M credit facility at 2.1% interest rate; orchestrated successful $750M IPO and two strategic acquisitions totaling $1.2B, driving market cap growth from $2.1B to $4.8B over 4-year tenure."
Remember, not everything has to be tied to money. Metrics can be tied to size or time. This is especially important for those who do not work in a role that affects revenue.
7. Craft a Cover Letter That Seals the Deal
Use your cover letter to clearly and specifically connect your experience to the company's needs. Start each paragraph with a company need, then immediately follow with how you've met similar needs in the past.
Provide a specific, detailed example of how you've solved a problem similar to the company's. This will eliminate any doubt about your ability to hit the ground running.
Here are a few examples of what that could look like:
For a company looking to improve customer retention:
"In my previous role at Alliance, we faced a 22% customer churn rate. I developed and implemented a multi-touchpoint engagement strategy, including personalized email campaigns and loyalty programs. Within 6 months, we reduced churn to 7% and increased customer lifetime value by 27%."
For a tech company aiming to streamline its development process:
"At WonderTech, our software release cycle was 24 weeks, causing us to lag behind competitors. I introduced Agile methodologies and led the transition to two-week sprints. This resulted in a 60% faster time-to-market and a 40% reduction in post-release bugs."
For a retail business wanting to boost online sales:
"When I joined Nordstrom, online sales accounted for only 15% of total revenue. I revamped the e-commerce platform, optimized for mobile, and implemented a data-driven marketing strategy. Within a year, online sales grew to 47% of total revenue, representing a 133% year-over-year increase."
For a company looking to expand internationally:
"At GlobalGrowth Inc., I led our expansion into the Asian market. I conducted comprehensive market research, established partnerships with local distributors, and adapted our product line to meet regional preferences. This resulted in a successful launch in 3 countries, generating $5M in new revenue within the first year."
For a startup aiming to secure funding:
"As the CFO of TechStartup, we struggled to attract Series A funding. I restructured our financial models, created a compelling pitch deck, and leveraged my network to secure meetings with key investors. These efforts resulted in a successful $10M funding round, 25% more than our initial goal."
These examples follow a clear structure:
Optional: You can add a brief statement connecting the dots between the experience you shared and the prospective role.
Remember, your goal is to make it effortless for hiring managers to see how you fit into the role you’re targeting. When you connect the dots for them, you don't just increase your chances of landing an interview—you position yourself as the obvious choice for the role.
