Content is hard no matter what…
But it’s even harder when you don’t know what to do with it. You get overwhelmed quickly and it’s only a matter of time before you know it, you stop doing content altogether and just pay someone to do (crappy) content for you.
This blog is meant to give you clarity. I want to walk you through my process as well as the way I think through each video I create…
Are you ready? Let’s bring some confidence to your social media! Here’s what I do in five easy steps:
#1 - START ON FACEBOOK LIVE
I start on Facebook Live for two reasons…
- I’m not a video editor. So if I’m always pre-recording video, then I also have to edit it. Not only does that take me forever (since again, I’m not good at it), but it ends up barely being good (because again, I’m not good at it). Going live allows you to get rid of most editing altogether. It’s a beautiful thing.
- It is the most authentic way of doing video. Being live allows you to engage your audience, ask questions, speak your mind, and do it all in real-time. And for those of you that are nervous about all this, your friends will give you so much grace when you’re live. They will celebrate you and cheer you on the whole time.
After your live video, before you post it, tap the save button (see pic above). This will put an HD version of the video on your camera to use on other platforms and in other ways. This is very important as we continue in this process…
#2 - YOUTUBE OR INSTAGRAM.
After I do my Facebook Live, YouTube or Instagram typically come next. I start by paying attention to two things…
- Did I do the video vertical or horizontal? If I did it vertical, it fits IG TV better. If I did it horizontal, it’s a better fit for YouTube.
- How long was it? If it’s under 10 minutes, it’s great for IG TV (have to be under 10 minutes). If it’s over 10, then it’s a great fit for YouTube. Because the algorithm on YouTube cares a lot about “watch time.” Which means we don’t want little 2-minute videos on YouTube, we need longer videos that provide for more minutes to be watched.
So…for example, if you do a Facebook Live that is vertical and 7-minutes, that would also qualify for IG TV. If you did a video that was horizontal and 12-minutes long, that would qualify for YouTube.
Now, without confusing you…I don’t always put every video that fits IG on IG and every video that fits YT on YT…
You don’t want all the same content all on your platforms. If you do, why would your followers need to follow you everywhere? They wouldn’t. Let Facebook, IG, YouTube, etc. look a little different. Give them some variety to attract different people.
#3 - CHOP YOUR VIDEOS INTO SHORTER PIECES FOR OTHER PLATFORMS
Download an app called “InShot.”
I use this app to pull short clips from my longer videos to use in different ways…
- LinkedIn.
- Facebook Personal, Business, and my Top of Mind Selling Group.
- Instagram stories and posts.
The reason for this is it gives us diversity in our content. It allows us to pull the really great part from some of our videos and highlight it. And it allows us to promote the longer version of our videos.
For example, I might post a 60-second clip and then say, if you want to see the rest of the video, there’s a link in the comments, my bio, etc.
#4 - BACKLINK TO OTHER PLATFORMS
When I create YouTube videos, I will also create a blog to go with it. In the description of the video, I’ll link my blog. Then, when I create the blog, then I can also put the link to the video…like this. (If you want to see this blog talked through by me, click here)
This process helps people get connected to us on different levels. Some people like to read, others like to watch, let’s give them both and link them back and forth. Super simple and effective.
#5 — KEEP THEM UNIQUE
Treat your social media like you treat your kids. All of our kids are different, yet similar. They all are alike in some ways, but they also possess their own uniqueness.
That is how our social media should be.
Let each one take on a life of its own.
Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube can all have a different feel, even attract different audiences if you want them to.
My Facebook is very personal. It’s full of stories and personal thoughts.
My Instagram is more about positive and encouraging quotes and IG TV episodes.
My YouTube channel is all about coaching and teaching. It’s way more “professional” than the other two.
You can do this too. I promise.
Here’s my question for you…did this give you some clarity? Do you know your next step? How can I help?
I’m here for you! Let’s make your social media great together!
