A business vision is so much more than a vision statement. It should come from deep within the owner or CEO. It's their guiding star and reason for going the extra mile, and it should inspire the team to go on the journey with them. For example, growing the business to make the boss rich might inspire the owner/CEO but it's probably not going to inspire the team!??
The team must feel excited and motivated by the vision for the business otherwise it's in danger of becoming just another of the ideas the boss comes up with and no one really embraces, rather like those motivational posters on office walls that we have all seen and largely ignored. They aren’t real and no one ‘buys into them’. In this blog, I'll uncover how to ensure your business vision energises your entire team for success.?
Clearly define your why?
In his book ‘Start with Why’, Simon Sinek states a very clear case that people buy why you do something not what you do. Sinek argues that individuals are more likely to support and engage with a business or idea when they connect with its underlying purpose, rather than simply its product or service. The "Golden Circle" concept - encompassing Why (purpose), How (process), and What (product/service) - encourages leaders to start with "Why" for a deeper connection with their audience, inspiring loyalty and fostering long-term success. Overall, Sinek highlights the power of purpose-driven communication to achieve greater impact and influence. Want to take a deeper dive? Watch Sinek's excellent 18-minute Ted Talk on this topic.??
I was with a client recently and asked him to tell me his back story of how he ended up where he is today -? the owner of a large and successful business. His story was compelling and quite personal, there was very little about the commercial success (the practical nuts and bolts if you like) that he had achieved, it was much more about his passion for the sector and his passion for delivering outstanding service to his customers and why that mattered to him. His vision is to expand and grow and yet maintain the outstanding culture that ultimately delivers outstanding service.?
Engage employees in the vision creation process?
Although the business vision should start with the owner or CEO, involving employees in its development ensures it reflects their insights and aspirations, fostering a sense of ownership and commitment. This engagement can lead to higher morale, increased motivation, and a stronger alignment between individual and organisational goals.?
To gather and incorporate employee feedback, start with surveys and focus groups to collect diverse perspectives. Hold workshops and brainstorming sessions where employees can openly discuss their ideas and expectations. Regularly update the vision based on this input, demonstrating that their voices are heard and valued.?
Once the vision is refined, demonstrate it in action by aligning daily operations and decision-making processes with the articulated vision. For example, if sustainability is part of your vision, implement green practices in the workplace and highlight achievements in this area. By actively showing the vision in practice, employees can see its relevance and will be inspired to contribute.??
Align individual goals with the vision?
To make your business vision resonate with every employee, it's essential to align individual goals with the business vision. Start by setting clear, specific goals for each role that directly contribute to the overarching vision. This alignment helps employees see their personal impact on the company's success, fostering a sense of purpose and motivation.?
For example, if your vision emphasises innovation, R&D teams might set goals for developing new products, while marketing could focus on launching campaigns that highlight these innovations. Customer service teams can aim to improve client satisfaction scores, ensuring the company maintains a positive reputation, aligned with the vision of excellence.?
By illustrating how daily tasks contribute to the bigger picture, employees can see their roles as vital pieces of the puzzle. This relevance makes the vision meaningful at every level, ensuring that every team member feels connected to and invested in the company's future.?
Lead by example?
Leadership plays a pivotal role in making your business vision resonate with every employee. When leaders demonstrate behaviours that align with the vision, they set a powerful example for the entire company. This alignment between words and actions fosters trust and credibility, encouraging employees to follow suit.?
Leaders should model the behaviours and attitudes that support the business vision. By visibly living the vision in their daily actions, leaders inspire their teams to do the same. Emulating the desired behaviours creates a culture of alignment and commitment, ensuring that every employee understands and contributes to the business vision. This approach not only reinforces the vision but also cultivates a motivated and cohesive workforce. For instance, if the vision emphasises customer-centricity, leaders should prioritise exceptional service and regularly engage with clients to understand their needs.?
Recognise and reward efforts?
Recognising and rewarding employees who embody the company's vision is crucial for reinforcing its importance and encouraging others to follow suit. Acknowledgement not only validates employee efforts but also sets a benchmark for desired behaviours within the business.?
Effective recognition systems include public acknowledgements, such as "Employee of the Month" awards, where employees' contributions are celebrated company-wide. Monetary incentives, bonuses, and promotions are also powerful motivators. For instance, if teamwork is a core part of your vision, consider a team-based bonus structure to reward collaborative achievements.?
Non-monetary rewards, like additional paid time off, professional development opportunities, or personalised thank-you notes can also be impactful. Implementing a peer-recognition program allows employees to nominate colleagues who exemplify the vision, fostering a culture of mutual respect and appreciation.?
By consistently recognising and rewarding aligned behaviours, you can cultivate a motivated and vision-driven workforce, ensuring your business vision resonates at every level.?

The vision needs to be a motivating, compelling view of the future that seems as vivid and real as what people can see right in front of them. Getting the whole organisation involved will make it that much stronger.
