I keep reminding myself, that life is a series of short experiments with individual results. I am by nature more likely to choose to exploit an option that is familiar to me which provides a higher certainty of reward, while exploration involves testing out unfamiliar choices.
When I am under a greater time pressure, for example, it is more likely that I will repeat choices and explore less. It is important to understand when and why people use exploration or exploitation. We are living through a period of great uncertainty. That can make this decision-making trickier.
In times of stability, you should explore new ventures, investments, partners, and alternative working practices to gather crucial information and reap potential benefits. The impact that the pandemic is having on our work and our ability to make decisions has been tremendous. The process is now more challenging when outcomes are uncertain—and we’re still living with plenty of uncertainty.
For a better ability of tough decision making I encourage you to continue your experiments. Get out of your comfort zone. Believe in yourself. Practice kindness. Just live in the present.
You will be better prepared to survive in future periods of uncertainty and volatility by exploiting the information and benefits you will be able to gather. Who knows what is coming next.
