How to make thousands of dollars in affiliate revenue per month with brand hijacking

There are millions of ways to make money online, but one of the most creative ways I came across last year was affiliate brand hijacking.

When people typically talk about affiliate marketing, it's generally some scammy get rich quick scheme where people try to sell random products to their family and friends. Affiliate marketers with real businesses typically build a brand in a category and review/promote products in that niche. For example, if you had someone with a blog in the legal space, they'd review things like:

  • Legal case management software
  • Different law firms in major cities
  • Physical products that law offices need

This is generally what most successful affiliate marketers do. They build a brand, give honest product/service reviews and promote the best paying affiliate programs.

The caveat to this is that this usually takes years of work. New affiliate marketers typically get discouraged and intimidated by big affiliates in their spaces, but the good news is that there's money to be made where the big sites aren't looking. This is where brand hijacking comes in.

Brand hijacking is basically writing on keywords that are specific to brands. Brands like PayPal, Netflix, Shopify, etc. get hundreds of thousands of searchers per month. With SEO, they can only have 1 position in Google's rankings and this means the remaining traffic has to go to someone else. This is why you'll see a bunch of random sites write on keywords like "PayPal login". Although this is not the best look for your site, you can still get some ad revenue from all of the random visitors coming to your site.

Affiliate brand hijacking allows you to make thousands of dollars by targeting transactional keywords from companies. Instead of writing on something like "Shopify login", write about "Shopify pricing" on one of their specific offerings. You can write a blog post and give users information about the pricing of a product and add your affiliate link so they can click and check out/buy what you're promoting.

Most affiliate programs have a cookie duration of 30-60 days, so if someone clicked on your link and made a purchase in the next month or two, you'll get an affiliate commission. With affiliate brand hijacking,

  • You give the user pricing information on a product
  • They can choose to click or buy using your link
  • You get a commission

This can be a win-win scenario, especially if the company isn't clear with their pricing for users. You can take this a step further by targeting only affiliate programs with recurring affiliate commissions. Instead of just getting paid one time, you'll get paid every month as long as the customer uses that product. This can quickly accumulate over time and bring in thousands of dollars per month from just one blog post.

I first came across this idea from Sam Rexford, a great affiliate marketer on Twitter.

The tweet above explains how he's making $400 per month by targeting a "pricing" keyword for an affiliate program. This is a very common practice by big brands, especially for the major affiliate programs out there.

Here's the SERP rankings for the keyword "NordVPN pricing". NordVPN is a great recurring affiliate program and many people search for it, so it's very lucrative.

It's probably not the best idea to go after the big brands, you can target the lower competition ones or the newer affiliate programs with recurring commissions. Most big brands will overlook them and most people are generally unaware that you can make money through brand hijacking.

The deeper I get down in the SEO rabbit hole, the more opportunities I find. Thought this was pretty cool, so wanted to share. If you have some SEO knowledge, starting an affiliate site definitely wouldn't be a bad side hustle to start.

Let me know what you guys think in the comments.

This is a nice idea. We should also consider the cost of PPC to Affiliate commission ratio.
