Spring is nearly here! While spending time outdoors with your elderly loved one can be nice, it's still important to make sure that they don't experience dehydration. The National Institute on Aging Shares their advice for making sure your loved one gets enough daily fluids.
1. Have them drink a full glass of water when taking medications.
Many elderly individuals might drink just the right amount of water to take their daily medications. However, try to encourage your loved one to drink the full glass of water when they do this. If they take three sets of pills a day, it's a good idea to have them do this each time.
2. Serve them juice or low-fat milk.
If your loved one doesn't necessarily like drinking water, try serving them a glass of 100% juice or low-fat and sugar-free drinks to add in some variety. However, it's important to limit their intake of caffeinated drinks such as soda. These kind of drinks can cause dehydration!
3. Make sure they drink water before going outdoors.
Before your loved one spends time outside, make sure that they have already had their fluids at the start of the day. This also means reminding them to bring a bottle of water with them once they do go outdoors.
4. Serve them foods containing a high water content.
Try serving your loved one healthy meals and snacks that also serve the purpose of keeping them hydrated! This includes fruits and vegetables such as watermelon and celery. The National Institute on Aging even suggests having low-fat soup as a snack during the day!
