How to make small talk easier

How to make small talk easier

Hi Reader,

Several weeks ago, I found myself at a networking event. As an introvert, these gatherings can be a bit overwhelming, but I used a few simple yet effective strategies to make conversations flow more easily. I’m excited for you to try using them as well.

?? Tip of the Day

First, it’s important to remember that networking is an opportunity to learn more about the other person. Too many people worry about sounding smart or interesting, and as a result, they focus too much on themselves and how they’re coming across. However, if you truly want to leave someone with a positive impression of you, focus on them. (Don’t forget: Everyone’s favorite topic to talk about is themselves!)

Next time you’re in a conversation with someone, try one of these two scripts:

?? “Tell me more.” It’s a simple prompt that shows you’re listening and invested in what they’re saying. It gives the other person permission to dive in deeper, which can reveal interesting stories and learnings.

?? Become a parrot: Repeat the last word or last few words someone says to you to get them to share more (this technique is literally called parroting). For example, if Person A says to you: “I recently switched careers from marketing to data analysis, and it's been quite a journey,” your response might be: “Wow, that definitely sounds like quite the journey!” Person A would likely agree and share more context, and the conversation continues from there.

Pro Tip: Avoid autopilot questions like: “How are you?” or “How did you hear about this conference?” You will likely get generic answers that don’t allow you to probe deeper into more interesting conversations.

Lorraine, love these 2 scripts, especially the "Become a parrot". I also think that shows you are really listening to the conversation. What is your favorite script if you are the one starting the conversation?

I used to make a list of small talk topics for dates ?? - I’m good at going deep but not keeping it casual. I’ve gotten better at it, and don’t ask people their life story at networking events!
