How to make the most out of networking events

How to make the most out of networking events

Often, it is the people we know who provide a pathway to our next opportunity. Whether we’re looking to expand our business or establish helpful contacts with individuals in our field, building relationships are necessary steps.

One of the most effective methods for making new contacts with people who can help us in our business endeavors is through networking events, such as industry-specific conferences, or a new homebuyer workshops at a local mortgage office.

Whatever the setting, it’s important to focus on the journey of getting to know people, and not the end result of a business sale or potential client. By prioritizing the relationships with others, you are able to better network, and as a byproduct, earn business opportunities.

The following tips can help you become better at networking, and as a result, a more successful business leader.

Be Genuine

Your first priority when meeting others should be to be genuine and allow them to first learn about you the person, not the business professional. Similarly, take time to learn about the people you meet before introducing any business-related talk. For instance, do not offer your business card until asked. Instead, imprint the person’s name into your memory. Remembering someone’s name can mean a lot in the moment and in the future.

Find Speaking Opportunities

Another form of networking is communicating through special speaking engagements, which can arise during your next networking event. Keep your ear to the ground for opportunities to speak at a business or an education gathering. When you do, you’ll introduce yourself to others on a large scale.

Seek these opportunities out when networking at a small event – often the networking event can lead to a much larger sales pitch opportunity.

Offer a Helping Hand

Nothing quite says you care than taking action – especially by lending a helping hand to someone in need. Whether someone is experiencing the growing pains of learning the business, or preparing to make a big change, your help, without expecting anything in return, speaks volumes about your character and generosity.

If you meet someone at a networking event and discover they are going through a rough time professionally, or maybe even moving to a new office, try to find a way to extend a helping hand. Even a small gesture like offering to help move boxes may help you connect with a future business partner. People will not always remember what you said, but showing that you care will not be forgotten.

For many, networking seems like a chore filled with pressures to take names and land business deals. In reality, networking boils down to how we engage and bond with others. It’s about people, connecting and building relationships. If you enter these opportunities with the right mindset – one that values the individual above the business maneuvering – the pressures are released, making room for genuine conversations that lead to better business relationships.
