How to Make the Most Out of Attending a Women in Leadership Retreat

How to Make the Most Out of Attending a Women in Leadership Retreat

Studies tell us that women who attend women in leadership retreats and conference have a significant advantage. In fact, Shawn Achor , happiness researcher and speaker, shared his own findings that women were 2X as likely to get a promotion and 3X as likely to get a payrise of more than 10% by attending such events.

But that was only true for those who engaged fully and then implemented learnings.

So here are three steps to help you make the most out of your next Women in Leadership Retreat or Conference experience.

1.?Reflect and consolidate your learning

  • Review notes and materials: Go through any notes, photos, recordings, videos, and slide decks you got access during and post Retreat. Sort, categorise and reflect on all the ideas again. This is such an important step. Research says that categorising and sorting will consolidate your learning and help you retain more. The reflection will also help you tailor learnings and implement ideas specific to you and your situation.

2. Set clear goals and action plans

  • SMART goals: Set Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound goals based on what you learned. This ensures your goals are clear and attainable.
  • Action steps: Break down each goal into actionable steps. But limit your action steps for each goal to just 2 or 3. Many more and it’s a waste of time because once you start taking action, more information will come to light. Outline what needs to be done, resources required, and deadlines. Remember too, action boosts confidence. And any action, even the wrong action, is better than no action. Do something.
  • Accountability: Share your goals with a colleague, coach or mentor to keep yourself accountable.

3. Share or teach your insights and leverage the Protégé Effect

  • Research also tells us that we grow and make more progress for ourselves when we teach or coach others with what we’ve just learned. Crazy but true. In fact, it’s got a name – the Protégé Effect where the act of teaching others can enhance your own learning and cognitive processing. So maybe find an opportunity to share what you learned with other women in your organisation. It’s not just good for them, it’s good for you as well.

I can’t wait to hear about your progress! Be sure to let me know.

The key benefits of attending retreats such as yours, Amanda, is the connection the time spent together encourages and building an alumni of those on the same mission for ongoing accountability and support.
