How to Make the Most of an Internship

How to Make the Most of an Internship

Internships are invaluable opportunities to gain real-world experience, build your CV and network with professionals in your chosen industry. Our production intern, Lily shares her advice on how to make the most of the experience:

Be proactive

Internships can sometimes involve quiet periods, but you should always be on the lookout for tasks and consider ways you can still contribute. Don’t be shy to offer a helping hand, even if it’s not in your specific department – your colleagues will appreciate it, and you will likely discover new aspects of the company that you may not have known about before or find a new passion outside of your chosen sector.

Explore different ways of working

You are likely to already have techniques for managing workload from your experiences of studying. Be open minded to other techniques and learn to prioritise tasks in terms of urgency instead of preference. This will ensure that all tasks are completed on time, and you are not scrambling when you are asked to multi-task. Prioritisation is a skill that needs to be learnt no matter the sector you are working in. Do not be afraid to ask colleagues for advice – they are there to help you gain experience that can be used in your future career.

Be friendly and approachable

When on projects, be friendly and curious. At Sassy+, you work with lots of interesting people with great amounts of experience. Utilise this in a professional manner to get the most out of your internship and learn skills that you can take with you. Everyone at Sassy+ is super chatty and willing to help you grow as an individual in the industry – try your best to ask as many questions as possible to seek out their industry knowledge. Remember, everything is a learning experience – even the smaller tasks!
