How to make the most of 'The Great Resignation'? as a job candidate

How to make the most of 'The Great Resignation' as a job candidate

It's an employee's market right now.

Employee's market

This means there are more job vacancies than there are talents to fill in the roles.

If you want to make the most of it, you have to shift your mindset from that of a job-seeker to that of a Top Performer. It's not about just getting that first job. It's about thinking big and thinking far ahead i.e. long term. Most importantly, you need to show the company why they would be lucky to have you in their team.

Being able to evaluate the company in the same way they're evaluating you is a strength you want to build before you enter the job market.

Firstly, you need to know what's the difference between an employer's market and an employee's market.

The Key Difference between an Employer's Market and an Employee's Market

Businesses are hiring more people now and workers are quitting in record numbers. This means workers are able to quit and immediately find another job without waiting too long to get a new job, which typically tends to have higher pay, better benefits and perks. Job candidates today are using their ability to leverage the great resignation right now to land better paying jobs. In fact, many workers are getting thousands of dollars in raises when they jump to another company.

In an Employer's market, the opposite is true. Even if you quit, the employer can replace you in a much shorter time period while paying lesser to the candidate. That's why they call it the 'Employer's Market' because it is advantageous to the employer.

However, since we are in an Employee's market, this opens up a HUGE opportunity for you to negotiate raises and additional perks.

Learn how to sell yourself

Most people think that selling is only for salespeople. That's a common misconception that many people have, and that's natural.

Sales is merely a conversation with a clear objective.

If you are in an interview for your dream job, your objective during that conversation is to get that job. That means you are selling yourself here.

If you are on your first date with someone whom you feel is probably your soul mate because you get along so well, your objective during the first date is to instil the idea that 'You are the ONE' into that individual's mind. You are again, selling yourself here.

If you are trying to convince your friends to take a road trip and trying to get them to commit their dates so that you can all travel together, you are selling yourself and the trip to them.

That's what sales is. The question is, do you know how to sell yourself confidently?

As someone who is constantly hiring, I see so many individuals who have big dreams but they completely shrivel when they are given the opportunity to sell themselves. They do themselves a disservice by being modest and they fail to get hired. At Mandate Wealth Management, we are very picky over who we select because we deal with finance. The opportunities that come with a career at Mandate far outweigh what is possible in the job market. We strive to empower our team members to individually make a 6-figure income while they are still in their early 20's or within the first few years of joining us.

Have you ever thought of this question -

How many years would it take for you to double your first salary in your organisation?

That means, if your starting pay was $3600 per month, how many years would it take you to earn $7200 per month?

5 years?

Or perhaps 10?

Is it even possible in the organisation you are currently in?

Ever wondered how you could make double in half that time? That's where sales comes in.

Learning to sell yourself is both a science and an art. And if you can do that as an individual, you get to decide how much money you want to make instead of waiting on organisations to give you that long-deserved-but-delayed-promotion.

What type of 'Sales' skills do you need?

Want to know how to sell yourself? Here's a list of areas you need to work on

1) A powerful LinkedIn Profile that captures the attention of recruiters on LinkedIn. Writing "penultimate" in your LinkedIn headline doesn't help the recruiter find you. You need to know what to write so that you appear in all the relevant searches.

2) A powerful CV that communicates your value effectively. It's not just about where you have studied and where you have worked, but also about capturing what you have accomplished during these phases. What wins did you bring to these places?

3) A story bank of stories that encapsulate your successes as an individual and how you helped the organisation increase revenue, increase profits, or reduce expenses or losses. You need to be able to articulate this well during the interview. Most people don't know the proper structure to use to communicate their value. Hence, they sell themselves short. They settle for a salary that doesn't reflect their full value and potential.

4) Subtle selling is also key. Your key stakeholders i.e. your family, friends, relatives are also observing and watching you. If you want to be recommended to employers and recruiters, you need to make them speak highly of you. That means you need to be impressive - and relatives are usually the hardest to impress without overly bragging about yourself - so learn how to win them over so that they connect you to someone who's looking for a candidate in the field you are working in.

Most importantly, for you to make the most of 'The Great Resignation', you need to have a high level of self-awareness. That means, you need to know what your passions are, what your strengths are, what your weaknesses are i.e. what is your personality. The better you know your own personality, the better you can sell yourself. The better you can sell yourself, the more money you can make.
