How to Make Learning a Natural Part of Your Organisation

How to Make Learning a Natural Part of Your Organisation

?If you and I have interacted or you know me, then you would have heard me use this Gandhi quote.

“Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.” Mahatma Gandhi

Learning as an individual, team and organisation should be at the core of our existence.

In this rapidly evolving business landscape, continuous learning is essential for organisations to stay competitive and innovative. However, making learning a natural part of an organisation's culture can be challenging.

A few examples of successful learning programs?

There are several examples of successful organisational learning programs that various companies across different industries have implemented. Here are a few notable ones:

1. IBM: IBM is known for its extensive employee education programs. It spends over $574 million annually on employee training and development. IBM's program is considered the largest in the world, with employees spending over 28.6 million hours every year in training and education.

2. Formlabs: Formlabs, a leading 3D printer developer and manufacturer, implemented a learning management system (LMS) to educate internal employees and external partners. The program includes gamification elements, such as certificates and points for completing specific actions, which enhances training completion rates and improves brand-partner relationships.

3. Reed: Reed, an employment agency, created an agile onboarding process for their employees using a new customer relationship management (CRM) system. This personalised onboarding experience improved employee engagement and reduced the time it took to onboard new employees.

We all know that learning is important, but it needs to have a direct impact on our lives (personal and professional). I am not going to discuss the reasons why learning is important, but here are some strategies, backed by research, to help you integrate learning seamlessly into your workplace.

Foster a Growth Mindset

Encourage employees to embrace challenges and view mistakes as opportunities for growth. Carol Dweck's research on mindsets shows that individuals with a growth mindset are more likely to take on difficult tasks, persist in the face of setbacks, and ultimately achieve higher levels of success.

Encourage Experiential Learning

Provide opportunities for employees to learn through hands-on experience and real-world projects. David Kolb's experiential learning theory emphasises the importance of active experimentation and concrete experience in the learning process.

Promote Social Learning

Create a collaborative environment where employees can learn from each other through discussions, mentoring, and peer-to-peer feedback. Albert Bandura's social learning theory suggests that individuals can acquire new knowledge and skills by observing others.

Offer Personalised Learning Paths

Tailor learning opportunities to individual employee needs and preferences. Researchers have found that personalised learning can increase engagement, motivation, and knowledge retention.

Provide Ongoing Support and Resources

Ensure employees can access the necessary tools, resources, and support to continue their learning journey. Researchers emphasise the importance of creating a learning ecosystem that includes formal training, informal learning opportunities, and ongoing support

Develop a Learning Culture

Foster a culture that values learning and encourages experimentation, risk-taking, and innovation. This can be achieved by recognising and rewarding employees who demonstrate a commitment to learning and by providing opportunities for employees to take on new challenges and develop new skills.

Leverage Technology

Utilise digital tools and platforms to facilitate learning and knowledge sharing within the organisation. This can include online training platforms, collaboration software, and knowledge management systems[8].

Encourage Feedback and Reflection

Encourage employees to reflect on their learning experiences and provide feedback on the effectiveness of learning initiatives. This helps to identify areas for improvement and ensures that learning initiatives are aligned with organisational goals and objectives

By implementing these strategies and fostering a culture of continuous learning, organisations can unlock the full potential of their employees and stay ahead in an ever-changing business environment.

Creating a learning culture within an organisation is crucial for driving innovation, improving employee engagement, and, ultimately, achieving business success.
