To progress in your career or your business, you must be able to get along with other people.?
Yes, there are a lot of things that you can do on your own. However, highly praised abilities such as teamwork, collaboration, cooperation and coordination are all based on the same foundation.?
Can you guess what that is?
That’s right - people.
It is part of the fundamentals of human nature for us to be drawn to people who are like us, sound like us, speak like us, look like us and even those with similar interests.?
This is most apparent from my experiences of travelling to 37 countries where I met all kinds of people, which is my favourite part about it!
When I meet other Malaysians and Southeast Asians during my travels, there is always an instant sense of camaraderie among us. As for the locals, sometimes I do my best to pick up some key phrases in their native language which gets appreciated a lot.
But the most unifying factor that I learned from engaging with people from different countries is to smile. A smile can truly connect people from all over the world, regardless of nationalities, social class, and everything else.?
Smiling is a simple but powerful act.
Be friendly and exude positive vibes so that others will be keen to engage with you.?
And this applies in a workplace setting as well.
If you want to get along with your coworkers, you need to be a friendly and happy person yourself because happy people attract other happy people. Meaning to say that people often resonate with good vibes and high and positive energy.?
Now, what about your colleagues who are different from you?
What will happen if you cannot get along with the people you work with?
Finding common ground is always a great way to build connections at work. Ask them about their interests or background facts about them.
What do they like?
Is that something that we can connect with?

Is that something that we have heard of or we understand?
Once you know some details about them, use that as a conversation starter to build rapport.
But we must also acknowledge that not everyone is the same.
And that’s okay.
Know that you can still stay true to yourself.
But learn to be open, cordial and to recognise these unique personalities and individualities as well. Practice putting on a smile and genuinely make conversation with them despite the differences you may have with your colleagues.
Building that certain level of genuine and deep relationship with them can take time. But trust me, having the ability to connect with anyone may result in more future career opportunities.
So learn it, practice it and put it to work.
Good luck!

Remember...
Hope is not a strategy, and that confidence comes from competence.
